Vince McMahon Demanded Rey Mysterio ‘Burial’

Back in 2006, Rey Mysterio was involved in a feud with Randy Orton and Kurt Angle. The feud culminated in a World Heavyweight Title match at WrestleMania 22. Kurt Angle defended his title against Rey Mysterio and Randy Orton in a triple threat match at the pay-per-view.

Against all odds, Rey Mysterio managed to pull off the shocking win and became the new World Heavyweight Champion. He dedicated his win to the late great Eddie Guerrero, who had passed away in 2005.

However, many fans would note how Mysterio was not booked as a strong champion at all, following his win. Despite being the champion, Mysterio would lose in squash matches on WWE television.

It seems Vince McMahon did not want Mysterio in the title picture, let alone win it according to Dave Meltzer on the Wrestling Observer forums. Meltzer revealed that McMahon only had Mysterio win the title after talking to Pat Patterson, who convinced him. Unfortunately, it seems McMahon was still hell-bent on burying Mysterio as the champion.

And proceeded to make him the biggest joke as a champion in the history of the company. Vince was adamant about Rey not being in the Mania main event, was going to lose a match even after winning the Rumble. Everyone on the writing team wanted to put the title on Rey. Finally, he went to Patterson and Patterson said to put it on Rey Vince very begrudgingly did, and then Rey was the only champion in history to lose TV squashes as champion.”
