This week’s episode of NXT had a shocking moment as Leon Ruff defeated Johnny Gargano to win the NXT North American Championship. He won with a roll-up pin. It seems this is the start of a change in the way NXT books their champions.
On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed the way the brand handled the NXT North American Championship changing hands. He said that for a company that treats its champions very well, the fact that they did the title change in that manner makes it seem as if the brand is trying “a new formula” to keep things fresh.
He also added that Ruff’s win had no long-term plans and was simply to further the storyline of Gargano being a “cursed” champion.
He wondered whether Leon Ruff will fluke his way to the top. We will have to see how the company handles their booking from now on.
