WWE NXT results July 29: Bálor, Lumis and Thatcher battle for North American Title opportunity

The Wrestling-Edge official results post kicks off as WWE Forever plays and we head into the July 29, 2020 edition of WWE NXT on the USA Network as 8:00 p.m. hits. Tick Tock. Mauro Ranallo, Tom Phillips, and Beth Phoenix are on commentary at the announcer’s table for tonight’s edition of WWE NXT.

Video Package

We immediately head into a video package that starts with showing Keith Lee winning the NXT Championship, then a video from last week’s Karrion Kross vs. Dominik Dijakovic match where Keith Lee was forced to watch his friend be brutally attacked at the hands of Kross who smiled, daring Lee to enter the ring against Dijakovic’s wishes. The video ends as we are informed Keith Lee will be speaking to Karrion Kross later tonight. We then head inside the arena.

Io Shirai & Tegan Nox vs. Candice LeRae & Dakota Kai

As we enter the arena for the first match up of the evening, Io Shirai’s music sounds. Shirai makes her way to the stage and moves to her entrance theme music as she hits the top of the ramp, and once again Dakota Kai attacks Shirai from behind! Deja vu, cheap shot by Kai! Following closely behind, Tegan Nox and Candice LeRae join in as well as all four superstars slowly brawl down the ramp towards the ring.

Eventually, all four women end up in the ring and it’s an all out four-way brawl! Tom Phillips, Mauro Ranallo, and Beth Phoenix remind us about the history between these wrestlers. The referee struggles to get between the female superstars, ultimately able to calm things down long enough to get things officially started. The bell rings and the first match of the evening is officially underway!

To start things off, LeRae mounts some offense but Nox aggressively fights back. LeRae takes Nox back down and mounts her as she delivers multiple Strikes. LeRae with more offense as she once again gets the cover and a second 2 count. Nox fights and gets an opening. LeRae gets rocked and in comes Kai. Shirai also tags in and they go at it. Kai drops Shirai and talks some trash in her face. Shirai comes right back with a big kick. Shirai works Kai over while she’s down. More back and forth but Shirai gets the upper hand. Kai with a Basement Dropkick and a Kip Up as the crowd rallies.

Kai blocks and turns it around, launching Shirai back from the mat. Kai with more offense, taking it back to the corner for a tag to LeRae. LeRae takes Shirai down for a 2 count. Kai tags back in and works on Shirai while LeRae holds her in the corner. Kai takes Shirai right back to the mat for another pin attempt. Kai uses the middle rope on Shirai but still can’t put her away. Kai with more trash talking. Shirai counters and drops Kai face-first with a Flapjack for a pop.

Shirai keeps Kai grounded with a Knee into her back now. Shirai drops down into a submission but LeRae runs in to break it up. Nox runs in and sends LeRae to the floor. Nox and Shirai go for a Double Suplex but Kai blocks it.. LeRae pulls Shirai to the floor. Kai kicks Nox in the face, sending her to the floor. LeRae goes out and sends Nox shoulder-first into the steel ring steps as we head to our first commercial break of the evening!

As we return from commercial break, we see Nox hits LeRae with a Headbutt, sending both women to the mat. LeRae and Nox both get hot tags, and Shirai takes Kai down with Shoulder Tackles and a Dropkick. Shirai runs at Kai in the corner, and Kai dodges. Shirai gets to the apron and LeRae tries to attack her, but Shirai dispatches her with a Palm Strike.

Shirai hits a Springboard Dropkick on Kai, covering her for two. Shirai goes for a Tiger Driver, but Kai blocks. Shirai hits a German Suplex, then goes for her Moonsault from the top rope, but Kai attacks her and stalls her. Kai goes for a Superplex, but Shirai gets Kai in the Tree of Woe, then hits a Double Foot Stomp on her, covering her for two.

Shirai goes for a Scoop Slam, but Kai evades and tags in Candice LeRae before LeRae was aware. Shirai takes advantage of LeRae’s unpreparedness and hits her with a Tiger Faint Kick. Shirai hits a Dive onto Kai to the outside. The ref is watching Shirai and Kai on the outside, giving Nox enough time to run in. Finally, the Shiniest Wizard delivered by Tegan Nox on Candice LeRae, Io Shirai heads up top to finish LeRae off with a devastating Moonsault leading into the three count pin and win!

Winners: Io Shirai & Tegan Nox

Video Clip – The Pat McAfee Show w/ Adam Cole

We see the clip from The Pat McAfee Show where Adam Cole stormed out of the interview after McAfee mocked Cole’s size.

Then, we see a clip from two days ago, where Triple H went on The Pat McAfee show and said that the whole thing was a misunderstanding, and McAfee says that it seemed like “a miscommunication” and wants to talk things out with Adam Cole.

Back from commercial and we get a recap of Bronson Reed winning the triple threat last week. We also get a recap of the social media spat between Roderick Strong and Gargano that led to William Regal scheduling a match between the two.

Johnny Gargano vs. Roderick Strong

Out first for our next match-up of the evening is Johnny Wrestling himself, Johnny Gargano! Gargano makes his way down the ramp and enters the ring as his entrance theme plays over the speakers in the arena. Out next is his opponent representing the Undisputed Era, Roderick Strong!

Strong and Gargano tie up early, but Strong gets the early advantage. Gargano reverses and gets a Front Chancery into a Headlock. Strong reverses into attempted Abdominal Stretch, but Gargano blocks.

Strong gets to his feet and goes for a PK on Gargano. Gargano dodges and goes for a Gargano Escape. Strong rolls out of it and goes for a Stronghold. Gargano escapes and both men get to their feet, staring each other down. Strong gets Gargano down into Headlock, but Gargano escapes and locks in a Cross-face, but Strong escapes.

Gargano transitions into a headlock and Strong gets to his feet. Gargano releases the hold and takes Strong down with a Hurricanrana. Gargano goes for a slingshot spear onto Strong, but Strong catches him and goes for a draping DDT. Gargano escapes and Strong goes underneath him to the outside, pulling his feet out from under him and dragging him to the outside of the ring as we go to commercial.

We return from commercial break as Strong and Gargano continue their back and forth effort for control in this match-up! Flat-liner by Gargano on Strong, able to isolate the shoulder of Strong! Gargano about to go high risk with the Baseball Slide, Gargano throwing Strong into the ring post as the match continues ringside! Gargano slamming Strong into the plexiglas multiple times, finally Gargano rolls Strong into the ring once again. Gargano gets up on the apron and over the top rope for the One Final Beat DDT on Strong into the cover for the three count pin and win!!

Winner: Johnny Gargano

We head into replays from the match as Gargano makes his way up the ramp.

Backstage – Dakota Kai

We head backstage where Dakota Kai is asked about leaving Candice LeRae alone inside the ring. Kai states she is not a team player anymore, she is ready to take on Io Shirai and win the NXT Championship. “I am in Io Shirai’s head,” Kai states.

“Did I just hear you say ‘I want Io Shirai’?” Rhea Ripley asks as she walks up, stopping Kai from walking away. Ripley continues, “I don’t have a problem with you not being a team player anymore, good for you as a matter of fact. The problem I have is you saying you want Io Shirai, I get her next, and I don’t care who I have to go through to get there.”

Ripley states she deserves the next title shot against Io Shirai. “We’ll see what Mr. Regal says about that.” Kai states. “Go talk to him then.” responds as we head to commercial break.

Backstage – Timothy Thatcher Interview

Backstage – Undisputed Era

“I’m sick of the Hollywood BS. You’re frickin’ Roderick Strong, you’re Bobby Fish, and you’re Adam Cole! We have run this place since we stepped foot in the NXT!”

Shotzi Blackheart vs. Mercedes Martinez w/ Robert Stone & Aaliyah

We return to the arena as Shotzi Blackheart heads down the ramp in her mini-tank for the next match-up of the evening! Blackheart shouts, “Welcome to the ball pit!” as she enters the ring and removes her jacket as she prepares for tonight’s one-on-one match against Mercedes Martinez (accompanied by Robert Stone and Aaliyah). Martinez slowly makes her way down the ramp and to the ring, stopping momentarily on the apron before entering the ring in full face mask and cape. The lights return as Martinez removes her gear and the referee signals for the bell.

Blackheart wastes little time as the bell rings, knocking Martinez to the canvas. Off the ropes, running at Martinez who immediately shoves Blackheart over the top rope and taking the match to ringside. Martinez slams Blackheart into the apron before rolling her back into the ring. Martinez climbs on top of Blackheart as she delivers a ground and pound! Roll up by Blackheart for the two count. Blackheart with a Step Up Enzuguri.

Martinez lifts Blackheart to the top turnbuckle, Blackheart counters with a Sunset Bomb and a roll up cover for the two. Clothesline and sent face-first to the canvas by Blackheart. Discus Forearm by Blackheart who shouts as she hits a Reverse Senton on Martinez. Blackheart goes for the cover, Martinez immediately kicks out! Spine Buster by Martinez for the two count cover. Martinez rubs the sole of her boot across the eyes of Blackheart.

Blackheart ends up backwards on the top turnbuckle as Martinez hits brutal Forearms to the chest of Blackheart. Martinez hits a Release German Suplex off the top sending Blackheart to the canvas with a thud. Martinez slams Blackheart one last time to the canvas for the three count pin and win!

Winner: Mercedes Martinez

We head to highlights from the match as Robert Stone and Aaliyah enter the ring to celebrate the victory! The crowd boos.

The NXT Champion Keith Lee will respond to Karrion Kross’s brutal attack on Lee’s friend Dominik Dijakovic during Kross’s match last week with Dijakovic.

NXT Champion Keith Lee Calls Out Karrion Kross

Keith Lee comes down to the ring and grabs mic. He looks to be all business. The fun-loving, jovial Keith Lee is nowhere to be seen. Lee says that Dijakovic is a grown man and he will be fine. He turns his attention quickly to Kross. He says that Kross has made his intentions clear.

“On the other hand, this man that seems to think the sound of sand, is the sound of a clock… Kross, you have clearly made it a point, that you want my attention, and you have done so much extra BULL****…”

The crowd is hyped and slamming on the plexiglas, Lee reiterates, “All your extra bull**** means nothing to me. I am here in the ring doing something that you don’t have the BALLS to do. Karrion Kross… I’m calling you out!”

Cameron Grimes Enters

Cameron Grimes music sounds and Grimes comes to the stage with a mic in hand. Lee stands facing away from the stage, not even turning to acknowledge Grimes. Grimes starts off as he states Lee is discussing Kross while he should be talking about Grimes. Grimes asks if Lee can hear him as he climbs to the apron, Lee still refusing to turn around. Grimes asks once again. Finally, Grimes shouts, “Can you hear me, Lee?!” to which Lee finally turns and flips Grimes over the top rope, slamming him on the canvas inside the ring. Lee then delivers a Splash to Grimes in the corner of the ring.

Scarlett Enters

At this point, Scarlett makes her way to the stage. She says nothing but stands in the smoke. Grimes runs at Lee once again, and a Spirit Bomb is delivered to Cameron Grimes by Lee.

Kross Appears On Screen

Suddenly part of Kross’s face appears on the screen above the stage. Kross begins, “Mr Lee, what kind of a man makes the choice to stand by and do nothing while his friend suffers. You did that, and now you have to live with that. At this time, I am going to provide you with 2 choices. The easy way, you give me a shot at the title. Or the hard way, and Lee, you don’t wanna know what that is, because EVERYONE will suffer. Tick Tock.”

Lee responds, “Kross, choices? Pick the time and place, and I will WHOOP that ass. Scarlett walks off as the smoke continues to rise and we head to commercial.

Imperium vs. Ever Rise

We return from commercial break as the next match is set to start momentarily. Out first are Marcel Barthel and Fabian Aichner of Imperium as their entrance theme sounds in the arena. In unison the two make their way down the ramp and enter the ring. Out next is Ever Rise members Chase Parker and Matt Martel. They make their way down the ramp and join Imperium in the ring. The referee signals for the bell and this tag-team match is officially underway!

Matt Martel and Marcel Barthel start the match. Barthel takes Martel down with a Snap-mare, then tags in Aichner. Aichner toss Martel into the corner, but gets to Parker and makes the tag. Aichner catches Parker and slams him into Martel. Barthel with an Arm Drag to take Parker to the canvas. Barthel showing hyper aggression.

Double Drop-kicks as Parker is desperate to get to his corner. Barthel with a viscous Uppercut. Aichner delivers a Spine Buster. European Uppercut Bomb for the three count pin and win by Aichner.

Winner: Imperium

After the Match

Imperium celebrate in-ring as replays are shown.

All four members of the Undisputed Era suddenly cut the celebration short as they attack the NXT Tag-Team Champions. “We’re the ones that run NXT! You mess with us, THIS is what happens!”

Video Clip

Tom Phillips sends us in to a video clip showing Bronson Reed’s journey to the NXT. Reed states his journey revolves around his wife, she gave the money for the camp necessary to join the WWE. The break-out tournament where he beat Dexter Lumis in his debut. Some people want it to happen, some people wish for it to happen, and some people make it happen. Reed as the underdog, made it, stating no one has his fighting spirit. “At TakeOver XXX the thick-boy’s dream comes true!” We head to commercial break!

William Regal Statement

As we return from commercial break, we head to a live feed of William Regal who states, “In light of the Karrion Kross and Keith Lee situation from earlier this evening, I must remind everyone that I will not be bullied into agreeing to a championship match, those are, and will continue to be, earned matches in the NXT.”

Isaiah “Swerve” Scott vs. Jake Atlas

Out first is Isaiah “Swerve” Scott as his music sounds in the arena. (As Scott makes his way down the ramp towards the ring, commentary remind us that Swerve is the only NXT Superstar to beat the current NXT Cruiserweight Champion, Santos Escobar of El Legado del Fantasma faction.)

Out next is his opponent for tonight, Jake Atlas. (As Atlas makes his way to the ring, a picture in picture video shows Atlas discussing what it feels like to be medically cleared and able to continue on his road to the Cruiserweight Championship!)

The referee signals for the bell, the bell rings and the match begins! Both men lock-up to start this match off. A Snap-mare by Atlas, but Swerve counters with a Head-scissors take-down. Scott quickly takes Atlas down with a Hurricanrana. Atlas gets to his feet and goes for a single leg take-down, then takes Scott down with a dropkick. Scott rolls up Atlas in a crucifix pin for two. Scott retreats to the corner and Atlas kicks away at him. Scott hits a leaping kick to Atlas’s face in the corner and we go to commercial.

Back from commercial and Atlas hits a springboard blockbuster on Scott, covering him for two. Atlas gets Scott in a side headlock, but Scott escapes. Scott attempts a back suplex, but Atlas counters and hits Scott with a bicycle kick and an inverted DDT, covering Scott for two.

Atlas chops away at Scott, then lays into him with forearms and kicks. Scott rolls up Atlas, then hits a German suplex into a rolling Flat-liner, then covers him for two. Atlas fights out of the corner, and Scott and Atlas stand on middle ropes, brawling. Atlas hits a Samoan Drop on Scott from the top then goes for the Rainbow DDT, but Scott pulls him down.

Scott hangs Atlas up from the apron and hits a House Call on Atlas on outside of the ring. Scott tosses Atlas back in the ring and hits him with the JML Driver, covering him for three.

Winner: Isaiah “Swerve” Scott

Backstage – Damian Priest

Priest state now that he knows who his opponents are for his Triple Threat Match next week, Ridge Holland and Oney Lorcan We aren’t going to see a surprise victory, Priest promises. “There is no scenario where I don’t see myself walking out of NXT TakeOver XXX as the NEW North American Champion.”

Out first is Dexter Lumis with his ominous entrance music as Lumis quickly makes his way down the ramp and enters the ring, giving the familiar creepy stare as he makes his way to his feet. Out next is Timothy Thatcher who makes his way down the ramp and joins Lumis inside the ring. Finally, Finn Balor’s entrance theme sounds as Balor makes his way down the ramp towards the ring.

The referee signals for the bell, the bell rings and the main event match of the evening is officially underway! To start things off, Timothy Thatcher and Finn Balor kick things off exchanging blows, Dexter Lumis stands back watching the two wear their energy down before joining in.

Balor focuses on the left ankle of Dexter Lumis. A Chop to the chest of Lumis by Balor. Thatcher delivering European Uppercuts to Lumis in the corner of the ring. Belly to Belly Suplex on Lumis by Thatcher for the cover and the two count. Double Wrist-lock by Thatcher on Lumis in the center of the ring. Balor on the apron grabbing at Lumis as Thatcher goes for a move of his own, Lumis drops Thatcher who rolls out of the ring as Balor heads to the top turnbuckle. Thatcher knocks Balor off the top turnbuckle as we head to commercial break!

Back from commercial and Thatcher is in control of Balor with Lumis nowhere to be seen. Thatcher hits Balor with a series of uppercuts. Lumis gets to the apron, but Thatcher hits Lumis in the face, knocking him back to the ground outside. Thatcher goes for a Cross-face on Balor. Balor tries to power out of the submission, but Thatcher catches him sends him back to the mat.

Lumis again tries to get back to the apron, but Thatcher knocks him off the apron again. Thatcher runs at Balor in the corner, but Balor hits Thatcher with a kick. Thatcher lays into Balor, but Lumis comes back and takes Thatcher down with a bulldog. Balor hits Lumis with a Pele kick, and all three men are down.

Balor gets to his feet and hits Lumis with a Sling-blade. Balor poses in the corner and goes for his running dropkick, but Thatcher grabs his legs and crotches him on the ring-post, then slams Balor’s left left into the post. Thatcher applies more pressure to Balor’s knee, but Lumis forces a break by hitting Thatcher.

Back in the ring, Lumis hits Thatcher with a Spine-buster. Lumis goes for Silence, but Thatcher instead catches Lumis with a dropkick. Balor tries to get back in the ring, but Thatcher hits a dragon screw on Balor. Lumis hits Silence on Thatcher, but Balor breaks up the pin by hitting a Coup de Grace on Lumis. Balor pins Lumis, but Thatcher pulls Balor off the pin.

Thatcher catches Balor and gets an ankle lock in. Lumis gets Silence in on Thatcher. Thatcher tries to keep the ankle lock in, but Thatcher passes out before Balor can tap out, giving Lumis the win.

Winner: Dexter Lumis

Lumis stares at the NXT North American Championship on the pedestal as NXT comes to an end and goes off the air!
