WWE RAW recap & reaction (7/31)

RAW GM Kurt Angle kicked off this week’s episode of RAW and was greeted with a great reaction from his hometown crowd in Pittsburgh. Angle guaranteed that RAW would be a great show. Angle announced that Big Cass will face Big Show, his son Jason Jordan will be on Miz TV and the Triple Threat match between Braun Strowman, Roman Reigns & Samoa Joe tonight.

Angle stated that today marked the 21st anniversary of him winning a gold medal with a “broken freaking neck”. Angle said that he had his ups and downs, but he wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for everyone in the WWE Universe. Angle went to exit the ring but Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman interrupted. Lesnar and Heyman circled the ring and then finally joined Angle in the middle of the ring.

Heyman accused Angle of wanting to take the Universal Championship of Brock Lesnar because he placed him in a Fatal 4-Way at WWE SummerSlam. Heyman said that he believes all three Superstars will gang up on Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam. Heyman insisted that Angle has been told by his bosses that Lesnar must lose the title at SummerSlam. Heyman then stated that if Brock Lesnar loses his WWE Universal Championship at SummerSlam, Lesnar and Heyman are leaving the WWE. Heyman then guaranteed that Brock Lesnar is walking out of SummerSlam still the Universal Champion.

Reaction: The Fatal 4-Way match was already incredibly interesting and this adds even more intrigue. With all the rumors flying around that Lesnar may be heading back to UFC, I’m sure people will talking about this a lot in the weeks leading up to SummerSlam.

The Hardy Boyz vs Gallows & Anderson

The Revival joined commentary for the this match. Anderson and Gallows controlled the match early but Matt and Jeff Hardy kept fighting back. Gallows charged at Matt in the corner but Matt avoided it and planted Gallows with the Twist of Fate. Jeff was then tagged in and connected with the Swanton Bomb for the victory.

After the match, The Hardys beatdown The Revival and Gallows & Anderson on the entrance ramp.

Winners: The Hardy Boyz

Dean Ambrose was interviewed by Renee Young backstage. Renee asked Ambrose if he was getting back together with Rollins. Seth interrupted and said that last week felt like old times last week in their victory over the Miztourage. Ambrose stated that even if the WWE Universe wants it, Ambrose still doesn’t trust Rollins. Ambrose said that he has already been burned by Rollins once and that it is not going to happen again.

Seth Rollins was then shown walking backstage and he ran into Sheamus & Cesaro. Sheamus & Cesaro stated that they were the best team in WWE because they are friends and trust each other. Sheamus said that Dean Ambrose was Rollins’ last chance of success and now Rollins is all alone. Rollins challenged either Cesaro and Sheamus to a match. Sheamus accepted the challenge.

Akira Tozawa, Cedric Alexander & Rich Swann vs Tony Nese, TJP & Ariya Daivari

Nese and Alexander started off the match. Alexander took control and Nese tagged in Daivari. Swann then entered the match and locked in an Arm Bar on Daivari. Tozawa was tagged in and he still had his shoulder bandaged up. Tozawa connected with a kick to Daivari’s face and followed it up with a Senton for a two count. Daivari battled back and slammed Tozawa’s shoulder into the mat. Titus O’Neil pleaded with Tozawa to take himself out of the mat and Tozawa shouted “no I’m okay!” several times as RAW went to a commercial break.

When RAW returned, Daivari had Tozawa in an Arm Bar in the middle of the ring. Tozawa was in agony as Titus was worried ringside. Tozawa broke the hold and connected with a running kick to Daivari’s head. Swann and TJP were then tagged in. Nese broke up a pinfall but got a Dropkick to the face courtesy of Cedric Alexander. Swann and Alexander then flipped onto TJP and Nese outside the ring. Tozawa then hit a Suicide Dive onto Daivari outside the ring. Back in the ring, Tozawa was tagged in and he hit the Senton off the top rope for the victory.

Winners: Akira Tozawa, Cedric Alexander & Rich Swann

Miz TV w/ Jason Jordan

Jason Jordan came down to the ring with new entrance music. The Miz asked Jason Jordan how it feels that some people are booing. Jordan said that the fans can do whatever they want and said “Miz was an expert on people booing”. The Miz then offered to guide Jason Jordan in his career and the crowd booed. The Miz asked Jordan if he was interested in joining The Miztourage.

Jordan declined the offer. The Miz didn’t back down and said that Jason Jordan needs his help to avoid the vultures in the locker room. The Miz said it makes sense that Jordan doesn’t want to join him because his dad Kurt Angle is the RAW GM and Jordan will just be handed everything. The Miz said that WWE will chew Jason Jordan up and spit him up. Jordan responded stated that he would rather have that happen than to join someone like The Miz.

Miz then insulted Jordan’s father Kurt Angle and called him sad and pathetic. The Miz said that Angle was pining for glory days that are never coming back. Jordan got in Miz’s face and threatened to him. The Miz went for a Clothesline but Jordan ducked it and Supexed Miz into Curtis Axel and Bo Dallas in the ring.

Reaction: I’m guessing Jason Jordan will wind up facing The Miz for the Intercontinental Championship at WWE SummerSlam. I’m fine with that because it places the IC Title in an important storyline for the PPV. As for tonight’s Miz TV, it was a bit awkward. Jason Jordan seems like he is forcing his promos. He is being thrust into a big role on RAW, so it makes sense that he is not completely ready for it. His in-ring skills are impeccable, hopefully his promo skills improve with time. The Miz is the perfect Superstar for Jason Jordan to feud with right now, simply because The Miz is excellent on the microphone and can carry this feud while Jordan figures everything out.

Seth Rollins vs Sheamus

Sheamus controlled the match early and slammed Rollins into the barricade outside the ring as RAW went to a commercial break. When RAW returned, Sheamus was still in control of the match and connected with a Rolling Senton off the second rope for a two count. Sheamus followed it up with an Irish Curse Backbreaker for a two count. Rollins fought back and knocked Sheamus out of the ring. Rollins then connected with a Suicide Dive.Back in the ring, Rollins planted Sheamus with a Slingblade. Rollins went to the top rope but Cesaro distracted him on the ring apron. Rollins connected with a Clothesline to Cesaro and then rolled up Sheamus for the victory.

After the match, Sheamus and Cesaro beatdown Rollins. The crowd chanted “we want Ambrose!” as Sheamus and Dean finally made his way to the ring. Sheamus and Cesaro then proceeded to beat the hell out of Ambrose while Rollins was still on the mat. Cesaro planted Ambrose with the Neutralizer and then the RAW Tag Team Champions posed in the ring. Ambrose taunted Cesaro and Sheamus while on the mat and Cesaro beat him down some more. Sheamus then leveled Ambrose with a Brogue Kick.

Reaction: Rollins & Ambrose versus Sheamus & Cesaro at WWE SummerSlam sounds awesome to me. This storyline has done the impossible and has made Dean Ambrose tolerable. I still think this will wind up with Ambrose eventually betraying Rollins, but I think it will be after the two have a run with the RAW Tag Team Championships.

Winner: Seth Rollins

Bray Wyatt came down to the ring and cut a promo on Finn Balor. Bray Wyatt said that he was everywhere and saw everyone who was trying to hide their sins. Wyatt stated that “Balor is a putrid shell of a man that never was”. Wyatt cackled in the ring and then fell to the mat in a fit of laughter. Bray then said that there will be no escape for Finn Balor. The lights in the arena then went out and Balor was behind Wyatt in the ring. Balor had his back turned to Wyatt and Bray once again started laughing. Bray grabbed Finn and Balor connected with an overhead kick that knocked Bray out of the ring. Finn then connected with a Dropkick that knocked Wyatt over the barricade.

Reaction: I haven’t enjoyed a Bray Wyatt promo in a long time and I don’t think a single word he has uttered has actually resonated with me. They are just a waste of time right now. I just don’t think the character is connecting with people anymore. I was a big fan of Wyatt before his recent run with the WWE Championship. The damage his feud with Randy Orton has done to him is immeasurable. Wyatt likes to refer to himself as a god, well right now he is god awful. I will have zero interest in this feud if we are going to get more segments like this heading into SummerSlam.

Braun Strowman vs Roman Reigns vs Samoa Joe

Strowman controlled the match right away and launched both Reigns and Strowman out of the ring. Strowman screamed “this is my yard!” as RAW went to a commercial break. When RAW returned, Strowman was still in control. Strowman slammed Joe into the barricade outside the ring and then Reigns blasted Strowman in the face with a right hand.

The action spilled into the crowd and then quickly returned back to the ringside area. Joe locked in the Coquina Clutch onto Strowman but Reigns broke it up. Joe slammed Reigns into the barricade and then booted him in the head. Reigns took control and brought the action back into the ring. Reigns geared up for a Superman Punch but Joe rolled out of the ring. Reigns followed him out there and connected with a Superman Punch after leaping off the steel steps.

Reigns went for a Spear to Strowman against the barricade but Braun kicked him right in the face as Reigns was charging towards him. Strowman then leveled Joe with a Clothesline. Strowman picked up Reigns like he was nothing and launched him through the ropes and back into the ring. Strowman threw the steel steps into the ring and then got kicked in the face by Joe. Joe then connected with a Senton on Strowman outside the ring and then ran into the ring and hit Reigns with a Senton for a two count.

Joe locked in the Coquina Clutch on Reigns in the middle of the ring but Strowman returned and leveled both Superstars with a shoulder tackle. Strowman then planted Joe with a Running Powerslam but Reigns broke up the pinfall. Strowman then picked up the steps and waited for Reigns to get back to his feet. Reigns hit Strowman with a Superman Punch and then hit Strowman with the steps and Braun fell out of the ring. Reigns then connected with a Spear to Samoa Joe for the victory.

Reaction: This was a very good match. I cannot wait for the Fatal 4-Way at WWE SummerSlam. The build up to the Fatal 4-Way has been great so far and the crowd is going to be pumped up for the match when it takes place on August 20th.

Winner: Roman Reigns

Enzo interrupted Big Show while he was doing pushups backstage. Enzo thanked Big Show for having his back. Big Show said that he was going to teach Big Cass a lesson in respect in their match later tonight.

Elias (formerly Elias Samson) performed a song in the ring. Elias was greeted with applause from his hometown crowd. Elias performed a song that insulted the city of Pittsburgh and poked fun at their baseball time. Kalisto then interrupted and came down to the ring.

Elias vs Kalisto

Elias controlled the match early and launched Kalisto out of the ring as RAW went to a commercial break. When RAW returned, Elias had Kalisto in a Chin Lock in the middle of the ring. Kalisto broke the hold but Elias remained in control of the match for the next couple of minutes. Elias connected with Drift Away (Neckbreaker) for the victory.

Winner: Elias

Alexa Bliss was interviewed backstage and she stated that she was excited that Bayley won the match last week. Alexa said she already knows that Bayley doesn’t have an extreme bone in her body and she would rather face her than Sasha Banks. Alexa then poked fun at Sasha Banks for losing to Bayley.

Seth Rollins thanked Dean Ambrose for helping him tonight. Ambrose still doesn’t trust Rollins and ended the conversation quickly.

Nia Jax vs Bayley

Nia grabbed Bayley by the hair to start off the match but Bayley fought her off. Nia then connected with a headbutt and knocked Bayley to the mat. Bayley’s headband fell off and Nia threw it out of the ring. RAW went to a commercial break after Nia knocked Bayley out of the ring. When RAW returned, Nia Jax was still in control of the match. Bayley battled back and connected with a couple knees to Nia in the corner.

Nia picked up Bayley and slammed her face-first into the mat and Bayley rolled out of the ring. Nia then put her hair in a ponytail to mock Bayley. Finally, Bayley rolled back into the ring and Nia stomped on her. Nia threw Bayley into the turnbuckle and Bayley rolled to the ring apron. Nia brought Bayley back into the ring but Bayley connected with a couple of kicks. Bayley then connected with a Bulldog and followed it up with a Dropkick that sent Nia to the apron. Nia got hung up in the ropes and Bayley connected with a knee to the face that knocked her out of the ring.

Bayley hit Nia with a Crossbody off the ring apron. Alexa Bliss sprinted down to the ring but Bayley saw her coming and knocked her to the floor. Nia then charged at Bayley but Bayley dodged it and Bayley got back into the ring right before the referee counted to 10. Alexa chased Bayley around the ring for a second after the match but Bayley escaped.

Reaction: The build up to the match between Bayley and Alexa Bliss is extremely important and I thought tonight was a total dud. The crowd was completely silent for the Bayley and Nia Jax match and really nothing was done here to generate excitement for the RAW Women’s Championship match in a few weeks at SummerSlam.

Winner via count out: Bayley

Big Cass was interviewed backstage and stated that Big Show was talking out of his ass when he said that he was going to teach him a lesson in respect earlier tonight. Cass then referred to Big Show as a “miscreant” for some reason.

Enzo came down to the ring and compared Big Cass to a bruised banana peel. The crowd sat in silence as Enzo rambled on for a couple of minutes.

Big Show vs Big Cass

Big Show attacked Big Cass before the match even started. The ref called for the bell and Big Show continued the attack. Big Show connected with a chop in the corner and punched Cass in the ribs. Big Show hit a headbutt and another chop across Cass’ chest. Cass connected with a right and went for a big boot but Big Cass leveled him with a shoulder tackle. Big Show slammed Cass to the mat and followed it up with an elbow for a two count.

Big Show went for a Chokeslam but Cass kicked him in the knee. Cass focused his attack on Big Show’s knee for the next couple of minutes. Cass connected with a big boot and then leaped off the top rope but Big Show connected with another chop. Cass then connected with another big boot and knocked Big Show to the mat. Enzo then leaped into the ring and attacked Cass from behind. Big Cass then leveled Enzo with a big boot and taunted Enzo. Big Show then connected with a KO Punch.

Winner via DQ: Big Cass

Reaction: This match was boring as hell. I don’t know why we needed to see it tonight. I’m assuming that this match will happen yet again at SummerSlam and Cass will get the victory. Tonight’s episode of RAW felt over after the Triple Threat match between Strowman, Samoe Joe and Reigns. The final hour of the show was a drag and the crowd wasn’t into it all. The first two hours of RAW were good, the last hour was a total bore.
