The former NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai is likely to part ways with WWE. She had been one of the top stars of the NXT brand after coming in as one of the hottest prospects from Stardom. After appearing in the second Mae Young Classic, Shirai signed with the company and began working for the black-and-gold brand.
Io Shirai reported set to leave WWE
While speaking on “Wrestling Observer Radio,” Dave Meltzer talked about Io Shirai’s status in WWE. He noted that Io Shirai is pretty much gone from the company.
“Io Shirai’s pretty much got her foot out of the door. Pretty much gone.”
As previously reported, Shirai has been out of action with an injury. In fact, she likely suffered the injury during NXT Stand & Deliver earlier this year. She was expected to return “relatively soon,” but that might not be the case as it stands. Shirai’s contract was set to expire very soon, and she might have made her decision already.
Shirai is also a former NXT Women’s Tag Team Champion, which she won alongside Zoey Stark. She had been teaming up with Zoey Stark and they defeated The Way to win the NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship. The duo lasted for a while until Stark got injured. Earlier this year, Io Shirai and Kay Lee Ray won the Women’s Dusty Rhodes Classic and challenged Mandy Rose for the title. While many fans expected her to make her return to the programming, she reamined sidelined with the injury that she sustained.
We will now have to wait and see what the future holds for Shirai.
