John Cena recently celebrated 20th anniversary of his debut in the company. Interim CEO and Chairman of WWE Stephanie McMahon recently sent out a congratulatory message to him. WWE stars like Randy Orton and Cody Rhodes, legends such as Triple H and Stone Cold Steve Austin, and several members of the AEW roster including Paul Wight, Bryan Danielson and Chris Jericho with whom he has worked with, sent video messages to the 16-time World Champion. It seems AEW President Tony Khan allowed the AEW stars to send Cena the messages. Now, it has been reported that Cena’s next match could be delayed.
John Cena might not work SummerSlam
WWE also teased a match between Austin Theory and Cena during a backstage segment on the show. Many fans are expecting that Cena will return for SummerSlam to face Theory. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE might end up pushing back John Cena’s next match for WrestleMania.
“At one point the idea was John Cena vs. Theory, and there was a tease on television this week. However, Cena is not announced for any future TV dates and given how many tickets he moved in Laredo, if he was announced for a show, he’d move more tickets right now than anyone except Dwayne Johnson. So it makes no sense not to advertise him. But they wouldn’t do such a match without more of an angle. So the match, which is clearly a direction, may also be delayed for WrestleMania.”
Fans had been speculating that the reigning WWE United States Champion Theory would be Cena’s opponent at SummerSlam. We will have to see what WWE has in store for Cena, now that he has returned.
