Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, WWE has been unable to have live fans in attendance for their shows since last year. The company has been holding shows in the ThunderDome with a virtual audience since August 2020.
For several months reports have suggested that WWE has been trying to get fans in attendance for The Royal Rumble pay-per-view. Now it seems that might not be happening.
According to a report by Jon Alba on his Living The Gimmick podcast, WWE’s current plans will not see a live audience for The Royal Rumble.
“Multiple sources indicate there are currently no plans for #WWE to have fans at the Royal Rumble.”
Alba took to Twitter and further elaborated his report, stating that WWE does not plan on including fans in attendance at Tropicana Field as Florida had 17,783 new positive COVID cases announced on Wednesday.
“As I’ve noted, it’s pro wrestling, plans are always subject to change. But the plan as of now, Jan. 7, does not include fans in attendance at Tropicana Field. FWIW, Florida had 17,783 new positive COVID cases announced Wednesday.”
Alba then said that a small number of fans in attendance should not be ruled out, but it will be very difficult.
I don’t think a small number of fans should ever be ruled out given what we’ve seen at the CWC, but as of this moment, that is not in the cards. And like you said, the set configuration could prove difficult.
The Royal Rumble pay-per-view will be taking place on January 31, 2021 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.
