Jim Ross believes the fans boo Roman Reigns to fit in with the crowd

On a recent episode of The Ross Report, Jim Ross decided to focus on the reaction Roman Reigns continues to get from the wrestling fans.

Ross compared the boos and jeers that Reigns receives to the “You Suck” chants that Kurt Angle hears during his entrance or the “Cena Sucks” chants that echo throughout an arena when the 16-time champion appears.

It’s almost like when Angle comes out, it’s, ‘You suck!’, ‘Cena sucks.’ I think people think it’s the thing to do and they’re not hip or cool if they don’t do it as evidenced by the crowd looking to do a hostile takeover in Pittsburgh [At Extreme Rules].

I think it’s a topical thing and people think it’s cool. That’s the best answer I’ve got for you. I don’t know why it would be, and nobody can tell us why exactly it is. We’ve all got a theory and that’s all it is.

Does the WWE Universe’s reaction to Roman Reigns stem from the need to be a part of a group? Do fans dislike him simply because it’s the cool thing to do?

It’s a possibility, but many also believe it has to do with the forced push from back in 2015.

What do you think? Is Good Ol’ JR right? Let us know in the comments below.

F**k you, Ross. Trying to make excuses about why Reigns is booed. He refuses to understand that the guy is just unlikable.

  • CC

But trying to make excuses like this just does not make any sense.
If he cannot understand that the wrestling industry has changed immensely in the last few years, and fans no longer accept being force fed a certain guy to try to get them over, then he is delusional.

Reigns could still turn people to his side if WWE just lets up on the heavy handed pushes and let him grow more organically. And I still say a heel turn would do that. They have done wonders for other guys in the past too. Just look at Orton. Starts off as a heel that nobody really cared about, then as soon as they decide to give him a push they go baby face. Fans did not care for that, so turned him heel and then he became a huge star.
Plus as far as the Shield goes, I doubt Rollins would be the star he is now without that heel turn.

Because even when he was in the mid-card, he was still the main event, just like how when Punk was champ, the focus was still always on Cena.

  • Steven Stevens

I just fast forward him, it’s like he doesn’t exist.

  • HBK

Regina has a fan, his name is JR.

  • Keith Learmonth

Most teams have one guy keep the gimmick. That’s wrestling 101.

It’s worth pointing out that not even Hogan or Austin were immune to overpushing. I recently watched through most of the Attitude Era, and there’s quite a few times he won #1 contender matches and things where you can hear a significant part of the crowd booing him, and Hogan was definitely losing fan support in the mid 90’s.

  • Keith Learmonth

I personally think it’s because guys like J.R see the quality in Reigns, and understand why he’s a top star, and just don’t get why the fans can’t see it.

  • Keith Learmonth

Why were people still booing him when WWE relegated him to the midcard, and had him as US champ, or IC Champ, then?

  • Keith Learmonth

I know plenty who do. They’ll boo the man, but when I ask them what they’re booing him for, they can’t give me a straight answer beyond “Um… he sucks, I guess?”

  • Kristopher Robinson

I personally dont boo Reigns, because I respect him. He is pretty stale all around, but he works hard and honestly seems like he wants to be there. Hes also really stepped up in the back stage area and that’s pretty BA. He has been shoved down our throats, but for quite awhile, he really hasn’t accomplished much and seemed to take a backseat. But of course, I’d take Elsmworth as Universal champ over Lesnar, any day of the week, twice on Sunday’s.

  • Kristopher Robinson

    Now that’s a valid arguement

  • Rinn13

It couldn’t possibly be that people resent WWE trying to shove “babyface” Reigns down their throat. How many times does he get stuck in the main event of WM, and other big matches, and people STILL don’t get behind him, before you give up?

Back in the day, traditional wrestling wisdom dictated that if fans CHOSE to get behind a wrestler, then you push them more. If fans don’t get behind a wrestler, you drop em. That’s how it goes. Just ask the mid-90s, and what happened with Steve Austin. Fans chose to cheer him, and you pushed the hell out of him. Vince once knew how to listen to fans (except with HBK).

Roman is stale – same music, look and personality from The Shield.

At least Dean & Seth were given a new look and their own theme songs.

  • Mike the Ike

Hey old man, listen up: people boo Roman because we resent being told who to like. We resent having someone shoved down our throats. We hate when every big match Reigns has is either for the title or for the number one contendership. The way Roman booked is terrible. He has no character. No charisma. His moverset is beyond stale. His look is outdated. Why the hell should we like Reigns? Because WWE runs the place and we’re supposed to drink our koolaid and be happy like good little sheep? Get real.

  • CC

No, his boos are genuine. Why can people like Ross not accept that?
The Kurt Angle “you suck” chants are a totally different ball game. They started when he was a heel, and as they fitted to his music so well, they stuck around even after he turned face.
