Shinsuke Nakamura left NJPW in 2016 to join WWE’s development territory NXT and this decision from the Japanese Wrestling Legend had surprised many fans at the time.
During a recent interview on Ace Comic-Con, Nakamura talked about his departure from the company and revealed the reason why he chose to leave.
According to him, he thought that he had accomplished everything in Japan and so when a WWE friend called him, the Japanese Star decided to switch promotions:
“In Japan, I thought I accomplished everything, So, I tried other things. So, then in 2015, [I thought], what should I do next? At the time, my friend, who works in WWE, called me. Probably it’s time to challenge next. Then I [decided to join WWE].”
It’s worth mentioning here that Nakamura was the IWGP Intercontinental Champion at the time and he was stripped of the title when he signed an exclusive contract with WWE.
