In a captivating and intense interview on CNN’s The Source with Kaitlan Collins, new Trump attorney John Lauro faced a barrage of tough questions just hours after bombshell charges were filed against former President Donald Trump. The charges, brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith’s grand jury, pertain to Trump’s alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election both before and on January 6, 2021. The former president is facing a slew of charges, including conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of an attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.
Collins, the CNN anchor, wasted no time in challenging Lauro’s defense of Trump. She pointed out that the former president had allegedly asked Vice President Mike Pence to take illegal action on January 6, based on information from the chief of staff who was present that day. Lauro’s argument that John Eastman, a coconspirator named in the indictment, had advised Trump was also met with skepticism. The indictment listed several individuals who had supposedly advised Trump against his claims of election fraud, including the vice president, senior Justice Department leaders, the director of national intelligence, CISA (responsible for securing elections), senior White House attorneys, campaign staffers, state legislators, and the courts.
Lauro maintained that Trump had been told about various irregularities in the election process and was advised that state legislatures had the ultimate power to qualify electors. He argued that Trump followed this advice, prompting Collins to stress the importance of verifying the accuracy of the claims made by Trump and his legal team.
The heated exchange reached a climax when Lauro invoked the First Amendment as a defense, suggesting that political debate, not criminal trials, should address disputes about election irregularities. Collins vehemently disagreed, emphasizing that it did matter whether the alleged irregularities actually occurred. She pointed out that the First Amendment did not give the president the right to claim fraud when he had been informed otherwise and then attempt to subvert the election by overturning the results.
