WWE’s Biggest Name To Leave After Criminal Charges?

The return of Vince McMahon to WWE and his subsequent power play have indeed been marked by a series of strategic and bold business moves that could be considered both audacious and ruthless, making them potential subjects of study for future business courses. However, the question that looms over this situation is how long Vince McMahon’s current tenure at WWE will endure, given the turbulent events that have surrounded his return.

Vince McMahon’s rollercoaster journey over the past year has been nothing short of tumultuous, affecting not only WWE but also its dedicated fan base. His initial step-down from his role in the company last year was prompted by a hush money scandal that raised eyebrows and led to his temporary absence. However, McMahon’s return in January marked a significant twist in the narrative.

One of the most noteworthy developments during McMahon’s return was WWE’s strategic move to strike a deal with Endeavor and merge with the UFC to form the TKO, a merger that proceeded despite ongoing federal government investigations into McMahon’s undisclosed payments related to the hush money scandal from the previous summer. These payments, conspicuously absent from WWE’s annual accounts, raised serious questions.

The allegations surrounding Vince McMahon are grave, involving substantial sums of money paid to multiple women, including former WWE employees, to secure their silence regarding claims of sexual misconduct and infidelity dating back to 2006. Additionally, reports suggest that McMahon made payments of $5 million to the Donald Trump Foundation for Trump’s television appearances in 2007 and 2009, adding further complexity to the situation.

Jacob Frenkel, Chair of Dickinson Wright’s Government Investigations & Securities Enforcement Practice Group and a former senior counsel in the SEC’s Division of Enforcement, has weighed in on the matter. Frenkel has suggested to the LA Times that McMahon could face significant legal consequences, including criminal or civil liabilities, as a result of the ongoing inquiries. These potential liabilities have the potential to force McMahon to step away from his role within WWE.

“Depending on the potential findings following the inquiry into Vince McMahon, McMahon could face criminal and/or civil liabilities that could prevent him from serving as an officer or director of a public company.”

Frenkel emphasized that depending on the findings resulting from the inquiry into Vince McMahon, he may indeed face legal repercussions that could hinder his ability to serve as an officer or director of a public company like WWE. This raises critical questions about the future of WWE’s leadership and the stability of the organization as a whole.

While federal authorities executed a search warrant and subpoenaed Vince McMahon on July 17th, it’s essential to note that as of now, no charges have been filed against him. The situation remains fluid and uncertain, and the wrestling world, as well as the broader business community, continues to watch closely as events unfold.
