According to HipHopDX, recent reports have brought to light an intriguing episode from Will Smith’s past involving Salt-N-Pepa’s Sandra Denton, shedding light on a missed romantic connection between the two. In an excerpt from Smith’s podcast Class of ’88, Denton, who previously toured with Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff, recounted a single date with Smith, reflecting on her impressions of him and the reasons why she ultimately declined his advances.
Recalling the date, Denton reminisced about Smith’s display of generosity, particularly his act of kindness towards a homeless person, which left a lasting impression on her. Smith’s character, as evidenced by his compassionate gesture, was described as being “nice” to a fault, leading Denton to perceive him as potentially incompatible due to her preference for individuals with a more rough-edged demeanor. This sentiment was reinforced by an earlier interview with Global Grind in 2009, where Denton admitted that her inclination towards individuals with a more streetwise persona had influenced her perception of Smith.
However, the podcast revelation triggered a response from Denton’s ex, Treach, who playfully alluded to the situation, referencing a headline about the story and injecting humor by invoking the Chris Rock-Smith slapping incident.
Okay, you were very nice,” she began recalling the date began with a drive in L.A. “This was the date you won and beat us out. You was so happy. You was like let’s go celebrate,” she said, referencing Smith’s first-ever Grammy win in 1989 where he and Jeff beat out Salt-N-Pepa and LL COOL J, who were also nominated in the rap category.
“Then we were out and you saw a homeless person. You gave the homeless person $100. And it was so nice. Then, we went to the Hollywood sign,” she continued, as Smith recalled Pepa was on a break from her ex, Treach.
“I think you and Treach had been broke up for a minute. So, in my mind when I was like trying to spit my game but I ain’t really have nothing. Cuz my concern was I was gonna get killed,” said Smith. It was a sentiment Salt agreed “was a legit concern,” a response that made everyone assembled crack up laughing.
The disclosure of this missed romantic opportunity between Smith and Denton emerges amidst the recent turmoil surrounding Smith’s marriage, sparked by Jada Pinkett Smith’s candid revelations in her memoir, “Worthy.” Pinkett Smith’s disclosures about the secret seven-year separation from Smith have generated widespread attention, although reports suggest that the couple is actively working towards reconciling their relationship.
