Liz Cheney’s time as a Republican from Wyoming is over, but that hasn’t stopped her from speaking her mind. The former Republican is now a professor at University of Virginia’s Center for Politics. She couldn’t win the reelection in the midterms, but Cheney is very vocal about Trump and his actions. It’s one of the reasons why she spoke about Trump over his actions leading up to Jan. 6th.
Donald Trump had supported Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) for speaker, but when Jordan couldn’t get the position, the former president congratulated Mike Johnson when he got enough votes after Kevin McCarthy was ousted from the coveted place in the House of Representatives. During University of Virginia podcast Politics is Everything, Cheney did an interview with Larry Sabato. She talked about how Johnson is “dangerous” for the republic.
He was acting in ways that he knew to be wrong. And I think that the country unfortunately will come to see the measure of his character.
One of the reasons why somebody like Mike Johnson is dangerous is because when you have elected Republicans who know better, elected Republicans who know the truth but yet will go along with the efforts to undermine our republic, the efforts, frankly, that Donald Trump undertook to overturn the election.
In my view, he was willing to set aside what he knew to be the rulings of the courts, the requirements of the Constitution, in order to placate Donald Trump, in order to gain praise from Donald Trump, for political expedience. So it’s a concerning moment to have him be elected Speaker of the House.

Does this mean issues for Mike Johnson in the long run?
While this doesn’t impact Mike Johnson, it’s worth noting that Cheney’s remarks do state that Trump tried to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. According to Mediaite, It also confirms that Mike Johnson was supportive of this belief and he voted to object to the results in Arizona and Pennsylvania.
Mike Johnson may have fewer troubles, but Donald Trump’s problems are far from over. He has business fraud trial in New York, and indictment cases against him in various other states. It leaves little to no room for him as if he gets a judgement against him in any case, then he would be behind the bars.
Hats off to @Center4Politics Professor @Liz_Cheney for her boundless energy at @UVA and for the attention given to every student she meets. Not easy in classes as large as the ones she's teaching. pic.twitter.com/JJjGM6XcSj
