It has come to light that the House of Representatives voted on Wednesday to open an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden via Mediaite.
The vote was 221 to 212, with all Republicans voting in favor. All the votes against were cast by Democrats. Notably, the House Oversight Committee started the investigation of his son Hunter Biden earlier this year, seeking to link the younger Biden’s business ventures to his father.
It is noted that Republicans claim Hunter Biden was running an “influence peddling” operation by trading off his father’s name. Moreover, they say, Joe Biden financially benefitted from his son’s business dealings abroad in China and Ukraine.
Their investigation has so far yielded no proof the president engaged in wrongdoing. Checks made out to Joe Biden, which Republicans claim was part of a nefarious scheme, have been dismissed by the Bidens as loan repayments.
Prior to the impeachment inquiry vote, Hunter Biden was supposed to testify in a closed-door deposition after receiving a subpoena from the Oversight Committee. However, he refused, and held a news conference in which he reiterated his offer to testify in a public hearing.
Lawyers for the president’s son say throughout their investigation, Republicans have selectively leaked closed-door deposition testimony to the public to distort the truth to smear the Bidens ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
Hunter Biden is also currently under federal indictment on nine tax-related charges. For months, Republicans claimed the Department of Justice treated him too leniently. After he was indicted last week, Rep. James Comer (R-KY) who chairs the Oversight Committee, said the DOJ “indicted Hunter Biden to protect him.”
