According to Mediaite, former President Donald Trump has expressed his desire to find a Republican candidate to challenge Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) for his seat in the House of Representatives. Trump took to Truth Social, a social media platform, to suggest that Roy, whom he labeled as a “RINO” (Republican In Name Only), is beatable for the right candidate. Trump’s message indicated his interest in supporting an alternative Republican contender in the primary against Roy.
Chip Roy is known for being one of the most conservative members of the Republican caucus in the House. Despite his conservative credentials, Roy has sometimes found himself at odds with the party and has taken positions from his right flank. He notably endorsed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for president before DeSantis officially launched his campaign, emphasizing the need for younger, proven leadership.
In the past, Roy has drawn Trump’s criticism for voting against rejecting the results of the 2020 presidential election in the House of Representatives on January 6, 2021. Trump has previously expressed dissatisfaction with Roy’s performance and support for other candidates.
Trump’s attempt to oust Roy faces a hurdle as the filing deadline for primary candidates passed on December 11, 2023. Consequently, Trump may not have the opportunity to support a challenger against Roy in the 2024 elections. Despite Trump’s desire for a change in representation, the dynamics of the race may limit his influence, given the established field of candidates for the upcoming primary.
