Lara Trump, daughter-in-law of former President Donald Trump, found herself at the center of social media mockery after a video of her singing at Mar-a-Lago went viral. Lara, who is married to Eric Trump, held the performance at the luxury resort in Palm Beach, Florida, owned by the Trump family.
The clip, shared by Ron Filipkowski, editor-in-chief of MeidasTouch and a Trump critic, attracted comments from X users poking fun at Lara’s singing. Star Wars actor Mark Hamill expressed sorrow for Tom Petty, whose song “I Won’t Back Down” Lara had covered. One user humorously suggested that Tom Petty rose from the grave, saw Lara’s performance, and then died again. Another user joked about cats screeching in terror, questioning Lara’s singing abilities.
This isn’t the first time Lara Trump’s musical endeavors have faced criticism. She released a cover of “I Won’t Back Down” last September, which reached number 10 on Billboard’s Digital Song Sales chart. However, the cover was met with controversy, as Donald Trump had received a cease-and-desist letter from Petty’s family for using the song at a 2020 campaign rally. Lara further fueled the controversy by releasing a new acoustic cover in November.
Social media users took the opportunity to mock Lara’s recent performance, with some referencing the previous criticism of her cover. Despite the online ridicule, Lara shared a photo on X with her husband from the Mar-a-Lago event, garnering some positive comments about their appearance. Newsweek reached out to Lara Trump and Ron Filipkowski for comment, as well as representatives listed on Petty’s website.
Lara Trump took to Twitter and claimed that she did not perform at a concert, rather it was just a charity event where she sang just one single song.
Here is a great example of the dishonesty of the “media” – no “concert”. I was asked to sing 1 song at a charity event & raised an additional $400k for sick & dying children @StJude – these ppl are truly deranged & @Newsweek should be ashamed of themselves https://t.co/5cLE4wX7wJ
