Booker T, a WWE Hall of Famer, is a well-known veteran in the pro wrestling industry. Prior to joining WWE, he established his reputation in WCW. His storyline with Triple H from WrestleMania XIX was one of the most contentious portions of his WWE career.

Booker T himself voiced no reservations about the plot, even in the face of intense criticism and charges of racial insensitivity around the angle between him and Triple H in the beginning of 2003.

The main focus of the rivalry was Booker’s quest for the World Heavyweight Championship against Triple H. The latter’s promotional materials featured contentious statements suggesting that “people like you” don’t win world titles, which were commonly taken to be a jab at Booker’s African-American ancestry.

In response to the flak, WWE had tried to justify Triple H’s remarks by indicating to Booker T’s criminal past, specifically his prior conviction for armed robbery at Wendy’s restaurants in Houston, resulting in a 19-month prison sentence.

However, this explanation wasn’t enough for the critics, as similar remarks were not made about white WWE Superstars who had faced legal issues.

In a recent interview with Adrian Hernandez, Booker addressed some of Triple H’s controversial comments from the angle.

“The one line people remember the most is when Triple H said ‘People like you don’t deserve to be here.’ That’s motivation for all of us to get up off our asses and prove them wrong.”

Booker went on to talk about how the angle incorporated elements of his real-life background, expressing approval for the direction of the storyline.

“It was as real as it could possibly be for me from an emotional perspective and a lot of the stuff that went into the angle, I approved all of it.”
