According to sources familiar with the investigation speaking to CNN, federal investigators are gearing up to summon accusers of music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs before a federal grand jury, hinting at a potential indictment from the US Justice Department.
These sources suggest that potential witnesses have been informed by investigators about the possibility of testifying in front of a federal grand jury in New York City. Such a move would signify a notable escalation in the ongoing government inquiry surrounding Combs, who faces accusations from individuals who have filed civil lawsuits against him.
Since November, Combs has been entangled in eight civil lawsuits, with seven directly accusing him of sexual assault. Notably, one lawsuit filed by his former girlfriend Cassie Ventura has been settled, while another implicates his son Christian Combs, with Sean Combs alleged to have aided and abetted.
A spokesperson for the Homeland Security Investigations agency refrained from commenting on the existence of a grand jury but acknowledged the ongoing nature of the investigation.
Both sources caution that potential witnesses have yet to undergo preparation for testimony, highlighting that HSI investigators are still in the process of amassing evidence and interviewing possible sources relevant to the federal probe into Combs.
One source emphasized the meticulousness of the investigators, aiming to ensure that any potential indictment is solid.
Grand juries, comprised of ordinary citizens, serve as vital tools for prosecutors, facilitating both investigative processes like approving subpoenas and ultimately deciding whether to press criminal charges. The involvement of a grand jury suggests a case has progressed beyond preliminary stages, where investigators typically assess potential legal violations.
Regarding the ongoing probe, Combs’ residences in Los Angeles and Miami were searched in March. CNN previously reported that he was the subject of a federal investigation by a Department of Homeland Security team focused on human trafficking crimes, with particular attention to sex trafficking.
