Diddy is facing significant fallout following the release of a video showing him assaulting his then-girlfriend Cassie in 2016. Howard University, where Diddy was once a student, announced Friday that its Board of Trustees is revoking his honorary degree. This decision comes in response to the video, which surfaced recently and depicted the assault inside an L.A. hotel.
Diddy received his honorary degree from Howard in 2014. However, the university now states that his behavior is “so fundamentally incompatible with Howard University’s core values and beliefs that he is deemed no longer worthy to hold the institution’s highest honor.”
In addition to revoking the honorary degree, Howard University is removing Diddy’s name from all documents listing him among its honorary degree recipients. The school is also disbanding a scholarship program named after him, returning a $1 million contribution from him, and terminating a 2023 pledge agreement with his foundation.
The video of Diddy brutally beating Cassie in a hotel hallway was released last month. The incident, which occurred in 2016, was detailed in her lawsuit against him, but the footage had never been seen publicly before. Diddy has apologized for the incident.
The revocation of Diddy’s honorary degree comes at a time when this year’s graduates are celebrating their achievements. This move by Howard University adds to Diddy’s mounting legal troubles and potential incoming indictment, indicating that the repercussions of his actions continue to escalate.
