Concerns about President Joe Biden’s cognitive health have resurfaced following a report from the Wall Street Journal, which detailed issues such as memory lapses and difficulty in recalling meetings. This report, based on interviews with 45 insiders, also mentioned that Biden sometimes speaks so softly that aides have trouble hearing him and that he often spends long periods in meetings with his eyes closed.
Dr. Stuart Fischer, an internal medicine physician in New York City, has called for Biden to take a cognitive test to reassure the public about his mental faculties. Fischer emphasized the importance of transparency in this matter, noting that the resistance to taking such a test or revealing its results would not be a good sign.
Despite these calls, the White House has dismissed the report as partisan politics, maintaining that President Biden remains a sharp and vigorous leader. During Biden’s last physical check-up in February, his physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, stated that Biden is “fit, active, robust” with no new health concerns, although no cognitive tests were conducted at that time.
The report has reignited debates on the necessity of cognitive assessments for high-ranking officials, particularly for aging leaders. While some experts argue that such tests are crucial for public confidence, others, like public health researcher Dr. S. Jay Olshansky, argue that these concerns are often politically motivated and ageist. Olshansky asserts that only qualified medical professionals, including Biden’s personal physician, should comment on his cognitive health.
