Violet Affleck, the 18-year-old daughter of Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck, made an emotional appeal to local officials in Los Angeles on Tuesday regarding a health condition she personally battled. Addressing the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Violet revealed her struggle with a “post-viral condition” in 2019, urging for more action to address the ongoing complications of COVID-19.

Introducing herself as a Los Angeles resident and first-time voter, Violet shared her experience:

“I contracted a post-viral condition in 2019. I’m OK now, but I saw first-hand that medicine does not always have answers to the consequences of even minor viruses. The COVID-19 pandemic has thrown that into sharper relief.”

She talked about the severe impact of long COVID, describing it as a “devastating neurological and cardiovascular illness” that affects one in ten infections and can severely impair individuals’ ability to work, move, see, and think.

During her speech, Violet called for several measures to combat the spread of the virus and support those affected by long COVID. Her proposals included the availability of masks, improved air filtration, the use of far-UVC light in government facilities, and mask mandates in county medical facilities. She also stressed the need for high-quality free testing and treatment, and the opposition of mask bans to protect vulnerable community members.

Violet concluded her plea by highlighting the importance of these measures for the safety and participation of everyone in Los Angeles: “They do not keep us safer, they make vulnerable members of our community less safe and make everyone less able to participate in Los Angeles together. Thank you.”

Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck, who divorced in 2018, continue to co-parent Violet, along with their other children, Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 12.
