Former White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain offered an unusual hypothetical endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris’s capability to assume the presidency if necessary. In an interview on “The Daily Blast” podcast with Greg Sargent, Klain said, “I think if a meteor came down and hit Joe Biden in the Rose Garden and squished him, and he couldn’t, and he was wiped out, I think she would do a great job as president.”
Klain’s comments come amidst increasing scrutiny of President Joe Biden’s ability to serve another term, given his age of 81. Despite this, Klain expressed confidence in Biden’s candidacy, stating, “I’m not saying Joe Biden has it in the bag, but I do believe firmly that he is the best Democratic candidate and is the person most likely to beat Trump, having beaten Trump previously.”
The discussion over Biden’s re-election bid has been fueled by calls from notable figures within the Democratic Party for him to step aside. Actor and major Democratic donor George Clooney wrote an opinion piece in the New York Times urging Biden to exit the race, emphasizing the challenge of aging. “The one battle he cannot win is the fight against time. None of us can,” Clooney wrote. Similarly, Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.) called for Biden to stand down in a Washington Post op-ed, referencing Biden’s “disastrous debate performance” and the ensuing valid questions about his candidacy.
