Democrats Trying To Remove Biden After Trump…

Democratic members of Congress have reignited a debate over President Biden’s candidacy following a brief lull after Saturday’s attempted assassination of former President Trump, according to Axios. Some lawmakers are expressing discomfort with the Democratic National Committee’s decision to proceed with a virtual roll call vote to nominate Biden weeks before the scheduled Democratic convention.

The issue has created renewed concerns among Democrats, with discussions of a letter circulating among congressional members advocating against the early virtual roll call. The letter argues that moving forward with such a vote lacks legal justification, especially since Ohio adjusted its filing deadline to accommodate the Democratic convention schedule.

“We respectfully but emphatically request that you cancel any plans for an accelerated ‘virtual roll call’ and further refrain from any extraordinary procedures that could be perceived as curtailing legitimate debate,” the letter states.

The DNC initially pursued the virtual vote in response to Ohio’s initial threat not to list Biden on the ballot due to a conflicting deadline. Although Ohio later amended its rule, the DNC has maintained its position, citing the potential for legislative changes that could reverse the state’s decision.

DNC Chair Jaime Harrison clarified that the timeline for the virtual roll call remains unchanged from its May decision, countering claims that the process has been expedited.

Several Democratic representatives, including swing-district lawmaker Rep. Susan Wild of Pennsylvania and outspoken Biden critic Rep. Mike Quigley of Illinois, have indicated their intention to sign the letter. Rep. Mike Levin of California, who recently suggested Biden consider withdrawing from the race, also plans to endorse the letter.

The debate within Democratic ranks reflects broader concerns about the optics and timing of the virtual roll call, with Rep. Jared Huffman of California, who has circulated the letter among colleagues, questioning its political motivations.

In response, the Biden campaign has given importance to the president’s commitment to his reelection bid, pointing to endorsements from numerous Democratic lawmakers and ongoing campaign activities. The DNC’s planned virtual roll call is slated to commence on July 29 and conclude by August 5, preceding the Democratic convention scheduled to begin on August 19.
