Gavin Newsom Breaks Silence After Biden Quits

CNN political commentator Bakari Sellers reacted to President Joe Biden’s announcement that he would drop out of the presidential race and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris. Sellers acknowledged the “chaos” created by Biden’s decision but expressed enthusiasm about backing Harris.

The news of Biden’s exit sent shockwaves through the political landscape on Sunday afternoon. Biden’s letter stated, “While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and my country for me to step down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term.” He soon followed with a statement endorsing Harris.

In an appearance on CNN shortly after the announcement, Sellers discussed the impact of Biden’s decision with CNN’s chief national security correspondent Alex Marquardt. He agreed that Biden’s announcements were “extraordinary” and noted his reluctance to dwell on past issues, as Democrats had been preoccupied with them for the past month.

Sellers, a former South Carolina state representative and Democratic supporter, expressed his disappointment with how Biden was treated but praised him as “one of the most consequential and transformative presidents this country’s ever seen.” He saw Biden’s decision to step aside as consistent with his transformative legacy.

Sellers mentioned that the Democratic National Committee (DNC) rules committee had recently met, and the credentials committee would convene soon. He anticipated that there would be efforts to ensure that Harris, who already has an active campaign and fundraising, would benefit from a surge in donations. He was skeptical about the likelihood of an open primary.
