The Harris campaign has faced significant criticism for its attempts to link former President Donald Trump and his running mate, J.D. Vance, to the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025, which has led to multiple fact-checks debunking these claims. During a recent rally in Wisconsin, Vice President Kamala Harris criticized Trump and his alleged “extreme Project 2025 agenda,” accusing them of plans to cut Social Security and Medicare, provide tax breaks for the wealthy, and dismantle the Affordable Care Act. However, these claims have been contested by various fact-checking organizations.
CNN reported that Project 2025 does not propose cuts to Social Security or call for the end of the Affordable Care Act. Instead, the document criticizes aspects of the ACA, particularly its Medicaid expansion, and suggests changes rather than outright elimination. According to CNN, the Harris campaign’s claims about Project 2025 are either false or misleading.
Similarly, VERIFY debunked the notion that Project 2025 includes plans to eliminate individualized education plans (IEPs), emphasizing that this is not part of the document’s proposals. USA Today also fact-checked the Harris campaign and noted that Project 2025 is a political playbook created by the Heritage Foundation and associated conservative groups, not a policy document officially endorsed by Trump. They also pointed out that Trump himself has expressed disagreements with some elements of the Project 2025 agenda.
Ben Domenech, who interviewed Vance before he announced his Senate run, criticized the Harris campaign for misrepresenting Vance’s views and the timing of the Project 2025 document. He argued that the campaign’s portrayal was misleading and inaccurate.
