Trump VP pick Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) recently made am unfortunate offhand reference at a rally amid the spread of a fake story he confessed to sexually violating a couch via Mediaite.
An X/Twitter user named @rickrudescalves kicked off a social media furor with the false claim that Vance’s book contained a confession that he once sought sectional healing:
“can’t say for sure but he might be the first vp pick to have admitted in a ny times bestseller to f*cking an Inside-out latex glove shoved between two couch cushions (vance, hillbilly elegy, pp. 179-181).”
It is noted that there is no such passage in Vance’s book, but the viral tweet sparked a surreal fact-check from The Associated Press that has since been deleted and another by Snopes that you can still read. The theme has been taken up to mock Vance by opponents for former President Donald Trump.
In that context, Vance gave a speech in Reno, Nevada, on Tuesday that included a reference to the object of his alleged and unfounded Big Comfy proclivities:
I have been the beneficiary, I have to say, of a number of strong women in my life, especially my beautiful wife who you guys saw earlier. Aren’t we–?
(CHEERS)
Now, I would call her up here to come and speak, but then I think I’d have to sleep on the couch tonight, so I’ll leave her alone.
(LAUGHTER)
Critics mocked the senator on X/Twitter for the utterance, including Harris for President spokesman Ammar Moussa, celebrities like Alyssa Milano and Bradley Whitford, MSNBC’s Michael Steele, Time’s Charlotte Alter, and others:
