Two deputy U.S. Marshals assigned to protect Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s residence in Washington, D.C., were involved in a shooting incident last week, officials confirmed. The incident occurred when 18-year-old Kentrell Flowers allegedly approached one of the deputy’s vehicles around 1:15 a.m. on July 5 and brandished a gun.
According to reports, Flowers pointed the gun at one of the deputies, prompting the marshal to fire four shots, striking Flowers in the mouth. Flowers was subsequently taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries and was later arrested.
Abigail Meyer, a spokesperson for the U.S. Marshals Service, stated that the deputies involved were part of the unit responsible for protecting the residences of U.S. Supreme Court justices. However, she emphasized that the Marshals Service generally does not disclose specifics regarding protective details.
Authorities have not indicated that Flowers targeted Sotomayor or her security detail intentionally. This incident follows a separate incident in June 2023 when Nicholas John Roske, a 26-year-old California resident, was arrested near Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s home and charged with attempted murder. Roske allegedly expressed intentions to kill Justice Kavanaugh following the leaking of a draft majority opinion related to Roe v. Wade.
