Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) acknowledged a division among Democratic supporters regarding President Joe Biden’s candidacy following the CNN debate with Donald Trump. In an interview with MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell, Pelosi, known for her extensive fundraising and political network, discussed the mixed reactions she’s been hearing since the debate sparked calls for Biden, aged 81, to potentially step down.
Pelosi described receiving feedback that reflects a split sentiment among Democrats. Some supporters are fervently reaffirming their backing for Biden, driven by concerns over Trump’s perceived threat to democracy. Others, however, question whether Biden remains the optimal candidate given the high stakes of the upcoming election.
Giving emphasis to Biden’s patriotism and asserting that he has consistently shown strength in their interactions, Pelosi expressed confidence in Biden’s judgment regarding his candidacy. She suggested that Biden engage in in-depth interviews with respected journalists like Mitchell to address concerns directly.
“I hear mixed. Some people are saying because Donald Trump is such an authoritarian and autocrat, we have to win this election. This is not a normal election where you want to win and if you don’t, you cooperate the best you can for the country and hope to win the next time,” she said. “This is something that is undermining our democracy and he must be stopped. He cannot be president so therefore people are very concerned. It’s split.”
Pelosi praised Biden as the “most patriotic” person in the country and claimed he’s been “at the top of his game” every time she’s spoken to him.
“It’s going to be up to Joe Biden to do what he thinks is — there is no more patriotic person in our country than this president of the United States [and] nobody less than the former president,” she said.
