Donald Trump questioned the authenticity of Taylor Swift’s liberalism, expressing surprise that a successful country artist could hold liberal views. In an excerpt from the book “Apprentice in Wonderland” by Ramin Setoodeh, Trump commented on Swift’s beauty and talent, but questioned whether her liberal politics were genuine or just an act.
Swift, who has become more politically active in recent years, endorsed President Joe Biden in the 2020 election and criticized Trump’s presidency. Trump speculated in the book whether Swift’s liberalism was sincere, considering her success in the country music genre.
He also pointed out other liberal country artists like Garth Brooks, questioning how their political beliefs could align with their careers. Trump previously targeted Swift over her support for Biden in a social media post, suggesting that her endorsement was disloyal to him, despite his role in passing the Music Modernization Act.
Overall, Trump’s remarks reflected skepticism about Swift’s political stance and how it intersects with her career as a country artist.
“She is liberal, or is that just an act?” he asked. “She’s legitimately liberal? It’s not an act? It surprises me that a country star can be successful being liberal.”
Setoodeh noted that much of Swift’s music is pop, but Trump responded by simply asking how another musician could be liberal.
“Garth Brooks is liberal. Explain that!” Trump said. “How does it happen?”
Trump targeted Swift over her Biden support in a February Truth Social post.
“I signed and was responsible for the Music Modernization Act for Taylor Swift and all other Musical Artists,” he wrote. “Joe Biden didn’t do anything for Taylor, and never will. There’s no way she could endorse Crooked Joe Biden, the worst and most corrupt President in the History of our Country, and be disloyal to the man who made her so much money. Besides that, I like her boyfriend, Travis [Kelce], even though he may be a Liberal, and probably can’t stand me!”
