Meta announced it has lifted the restrictions on former President Donald Trump’s Instagram and Facebook accounts in preparation for the upcoming November election. According to Axios, Meta released a statement explaining that the decision was made to ensure fairness among all presidential candidates.
After the January 6 Capitol attack, Meta and other social media platforms had suspended Trump’s accounts due to concerns that his posts could incite further political violence. Although Trump’s accounts were reinstated in January 2023, they were subject to strict penalties, such as advertising restrictions, for any violations of Meta’s terms of service.
A spokesperson confirmed to Axios that Meta decided to remove these restrictions because there was concern that even a minor policy violation could lead to immediate suspension of Trump’s accounts, potentially denying him access to his followers during critical months before the election.
“In assessing our responsibility to allow political expression, we believe that the American people should hear from presidential nominees on equal terms,” stated Meta’s president of global affairs, Nick Clegg. He added that the prior penalties were responses to extraordinary circumstances and had not been implemented.
Despite lifting the previous restrictions, Meta will continue to monitor and limit engagement on controversial posts involving conspiracy theories.
Following his ban from major social media platforms, Trump launched his own social network, Truth Social, where he predominantly shares his campaign-related messages. Trump recently stirred controversy on Truth Social by declaring his intention to pursue election fraudsters aggressively if reelected, including threats directed at Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
