The federal judge presiding over Hunter Biden’s criminal tax trial in California has agreed to move the trial from June to September. United States District Court Judge Mark Scarsi made the decision after Hunter Biden’s attorneys requested a delay during a pre-trial hearing on Wednesday.
Hunter Biden faces three felonies and six misdemeanors related to $1.4 million in unpaid taxes, which have since been paid. Special Counsel David Weiss alleges that Biden engaged in a “four-year scheme” of not paying federal income taxes from January 2017 to October 2020 while filing false tax reports.
Originally set to begin on June 20, the trial will now start with jury selection on September 5. Federal prosecutors had opposed the delay, arguing that no defendant should receive a continuance for lodging an appeal without jurisdiction and that other reasons provided for the delay were insufficient.
In addition to the tax charges, Hunter Biden faces a separate trial in Delaware beginning on June 3 for federal gun charges, including making false statements during a firearm purchase and possession of a firearm while using or addicted to a controlled substance. He has pleaded not guilty to these charges.
