Former President Donald Trump surprised many by selecting Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH) as his running mate on Monday, despite Vance’s history of sharply criticizing Trump in the past.

Since entering politics in 2021, Vance has oscillated in his views towards Trump, initially being a vocal opponent before becoming an ardent supporter. Trump endorsed Vance during the 2022 GOP Ohio Senate primary, cementing their political alliance.

Recently, Vance blamed President Joe Biden’s rhetoric for the attempt on Trump’s life, stating on social media shortly after the incident, “The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs. That rhetoric led directly to President Trump’s attempted assassination.”

However, Vance’s own past rhetoric against Trump has been harsh. In 2016, he described Trump as “reprehensible,” an “idiot,” and even compared him to Hitler. He criticized Trump’s character, citing allegations of sexual assault and labeling him as a “monster.”

Despite these criticisms, Trump announced Vance as his vice presidential pick on Truth Social, emphasizing Vance’s talents and suitability for the role. This surprising move highlights the complexities of political alliances and the shifting dynamics within the Republican Party ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
