President Biden made a surprise nighttime visit to the Delaware home of Hallie Biden on Sunday, just before she is set to serve as a key witness at first son Hunter Biden’s federal trial for alleged gun crimes. The visit took place around 8 p.m., eight days before Hunter Biden’s trial, scheduled to begin on June 3.
Hallie Biden, who dated Hunter around the time of his alleged gun offenses, is one of a dozen expected witnesses. She was previously married to Beau Biden, who died of brain cancer in 2015, before entering a relationship with Hunter.
Prosecutors allege that Hunter lied about his drug use on gun purchase forms and briefly illegally possessed a firearm, which Hallie disposed of in a public dumpster in 2018. The visit from President Biden occurred just four days before the anniversary of Beau’s death, adding a personal dimension to the timing.
White House spokesman Andrew Bates confirmed that the president did not discuss the trial with Hallie Biden during the visit. “He visited her because of the approaching 9th anniversary of Beau’s passing,” Bates stated.
Hunter Biden, the president’s 54-year-old son, faces potential prison time in this and another scheduled trial. His first trial addresses allegations of lying on gun purchase forms and illegal possession of a firearm. The second trial, set to occur in Los Angeles in September, involves accusations of failing to pay over $1.4 million in federal taxes from 2016 to 2019.
In February 2018, Hunter was reportedly spending $7,000 a month on rent for a home in Annapolis, MD, which he shared with Hallie. Text messages from Hunter’s abandoned laptop indicate that Hallie disposed of his alleged illegal firearm in a trash bin.
These trials come amid allegations of a Justice Department coverup to protect the Biden family from liability related to foreign business dealings, in which Joe Biden allegedly played a recurring role. Hunter had agreed to a probation-only plea deal for the gun and tax crimes last June, but the deal fell apart in July when his attorneys sought broad immunity for past conduct, including potential violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act, which could implicate his father.
