Conservative lawyer George Conway has expressed his concern over the conspicuous absence of Mark Meadows, former President Donald Trump’s chief of staff during the Capitol riot, amid the ongoing federal investigation into Trump’s actions surrounding the 2020 election.
Special Counsel Jack Smith is leading the investigation, which includes examining Trump’s attempts to overturn the election results through pressuring Republican officials in states he lost and his actions related to the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot.
Recently, Trump revealed that his attorneys received a target letter from federal investigators, indicating the possibility of charges against him in the case. Trump is already facing 37 federal counts related to his retention of government documents after leaving office, and he has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
During a recent appearance on CNN’s AC360, Anderson Cooper asked George Conway about the significance of the fact that no one else in Trump’s team has been identified as receiving a target letter. Cooper also questioned whether Meadows, who has seemingly vanished from the public scene, might be cooperating with the investigation.
Conway acknowledged the difficulty in interpreting the lack of additional target letters. He explained that it is possible that some individuals may be keeping silent, even if they have received target letters. He also noted that there are situations where prosecutors may choose not to send target letters when pursuing charges.
Regarding Meadows’ silence, Conway found it intriguing and mentioned that during the documents case, only one person, Waltine Nauta, did not end up cooperating. He pointed out that Meadows, who has been a frequent guest on right-wing news networks, has been uncharacteristically quiet lately. Conway suggested that there might be more to Meadows’ low profile, given his prominent role as Trump’s chief of staff during the relevant period of interest in the investigation.
