CNN anchor Phil Mattingly recently stated to his crew that President Joe Biden “has defeated Trump for 2-and-a-half years” in a series of special elections after the latest win in NY3.
In the special election for the New York 3rd Congressional District to replace the expelled former Representative George Santos (R-NY), Democratic candidate and Rep.-elect Tom Suozzi (D-NY) defeated Republican opponent Mazi Pilip on Tuesday night.
During the CNN This Morning broadcast on Wednesday morning, Rep. Max Rose was made fun of by conservative pundits for attempting to attribute Suozzi’s win to Biden. Mattingly brought up this earlier discussion.
However, he made the case that Democrats have won a lot of unexpected or resounding victories in special elections and ballot initiatives since Biden took office, which pleased the Biden-Harris team:
“PHIL MATTINGLY: I want to pull that thread back to what we were talking about the end when Max was trying to spike the football in the first panel, which is. What happened in the last ten years? Well, nine years ago, Donald Trump started running for president.
SE CUPP: Exactly right. You did the correct math.
PHIL MATTINGLY: Donald Trump is going to be a bad guy. I state. Donald Trump will be running against Joe Biden. Joe Biden has defeated Donald Trump over the course of the last two and a half years. Every single special election, every single ballot initiative Democrats have overperformed. Hell in the House state special — state House special election yesterday they overperformed. Kept the majority in the Pennsylvania State House. Why is this such a toss-up? Why is this race not necessarily in Biden’s hands? In fact, he could very well lose the general.
REP. MAX ROSE: I mean, it’s clear we we still the special elections, right? That’s that’s what we that’s what we do of course.
SE CUPP: Don’t even joke about it!
PHIL MATTINGLY: He’s kidding guys.
REP. MAX ROSE: So so look here’s the deal. I think we Democrats have to be cognizant of Donald Trump’s unique strengths. Right. And there is a unique political strength to draw out nontraditional voters. You can’t ignore that.
But with that being said, though, you know, we’ve had seven or so elections, right? And you’ve had consistent Democratic victories or overperformance.
We also shouldn’t overestimate the power of this MAGA extremism at the ballot box. It is constantly rejected by these moderate swing voters, particularly in suburban areas. And there’s no reason to suspect that 2024, if Democrats stay disciplined, would be any different.”
