During a recent interview, legendary boxer Mike Tyson shared his thoughts on Gervonta Davis, a rising star in the boxing world, and his potential to become the face of the sport. According to Tyson, Davis is indeed the face of boxing, but he believes that it is Ryan Garcia who draws the crowds. He explains that the large number of fans Garcia brings to his fights is what makes him the face of boxing, and now that he has lost to Davis, those fans are likely to become Davis’ fans as well, further solidifying his position as the face of the sport.
Tyson goes on to speculate on Davis’ future in boxing, saying that it is entirely possible that he could go undefeated for his entire career. However, he also acknowledges the skill of two other rising boxers, Devin Haney and Shakur Stevenson, who he believes could be a threat to Davis’ reign as the top fighter. Tyson notes that while these fighters have sparred with Davis in the past, sparring is not the same as fighting, and it is impossible to predict who would come out on top in an actual match.
“He is truly right, he is the face of boxing,” Tyson said. “But that’s because Ryan Garcia is the draw. And that makes [Garcia] the face of boxing because of the amount of people that he fills in an arena. Since that fight, Ryan Garcia fans will turn into Tank’s fans, and [Davis] is going to have the biggest drawing power, I believe.”
“Ryan brought those people out, and normally when the draw gets beaten, like Ryan, when he gets beaten, the people that are his fans are now Tank’s fans.
It’s a great possibility [that Tank Davis could go undefeated his whole career], but then you’ve got Devin Haney and Shakur [Stevenson],” said Tyson.
“Those guys are very good. Those are the only two guys who are possibly a threat to him.”
“I know they’ve boxed before, and some people got the advantage over others in sparring, but sparring’s not like fighting. For some reason, people don’t fight as hard as they spar, or some people don’t train as hard as they fight, it’s just a strange dynamic in that.”
Overall, Tyson’s insights into the current state of boxing highlight the shifting dynamics of the sport and the importance of drawing in large crowds of fans. He also demonstrates a deep understanding of the technical aspects of boxing, acknowledging the skill and potential of other talented fighters who could challenge Davis in the future. With his vast knowledge and experience in the sport, Tyson’s opinions carry weight and are sure to be taken seriously by fans and experts alike.
