WWE is considered an essential business in the state of Florida. Due to this recent decision by the Governor of Flordia, any sporting or entertainment groups can hold events in Florida if they have a national broadcast and are able to film in a closed set.
Reports suggested that some people in WWE suspected that there were some dealings behind the scenes that led to this “essential business” status.
MSNBC’s All In with Chris Hayes went into detail on this. Dave Zirin, who is the editor of The Nation made an appearance on the show and said: “This stinks to the high heavens and it stinks with quid pro quo.”
Zirin discussed the timeline of events, which included Linda McMahon promising to give $18.5 million to the state of Flordia on the day WWE was deemed to be an essential business. Zirin then talked about WWE’s deals with FOX and USA Network, where they had to air live content.
He then talked about WWE’s recent budget cuts, where the company let go of over one hundred employees and how the company managed to turn in a huge profit afterwards. He ended it by pointing out Vince McMahon is on Donald Trump’s re-opening committee.
“This person who is putting his own wrestlers at risk because someone on his staff has coronavirus is going to decide when it’s safe for the rest of us.”
