Anthony Guglielmi, spokesperson for the U.S. Secret Service, addressed baseless claims regarding the protection provided to former President Donald Trump, which came under scrutiny following a failed assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally on Saturday.
In a post on Twitter/X, Guglielmi responded to a claim by Susan Crabtree of Real Clear Politics, a right-leaning news outlet, that funds for Trump’s Secret Service protection were “diverted” to an event attended by First Lady Dr. Jill Biden. Crabtree cited “Secret Sources,” and others, including Rep. Mike Waltz (R-FL), claimed without evidence that Trump’s requests for additional security were denied. Both the Secret Service and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas refuted these claims. Guglielmi described Crabtree’s assertion as “very wrong” and emphasized that “protection models don’t work that way.”
The Secret Service has faced significant criticism for failing to protect Trump from a shooter who killed one person and injured two others at the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Mayorkas labeled the incident a “failure” on the part of the Secret Service, and President Joe Biden has pledged an independent investigation.
