According to Yahoo, James Gunn is known for his love of improv when it comes to working with his cast members. He isn’t alone in this approach, as Taika Waititi also heavily relied on improvisation in his direction of Thor: Ragnarok. In fact, even Chris Pratt, who frequently collaborates with Gunn, is known for his improvisational skills, which were on full display during his time on NBC’s Parks & Recreation. So it’s no surprise that when Gunn and his team of talented actors get together, they often end up improvising their way through scenes.
However, not all of the Guardians of the Galaxy cast members are as comfortable with this approach as others. Specifically, Sylvester Stallone, who played Ravager Stakar Ogord in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, wasn’t always on board with Gunn’s improvisational suggestions. Pratt and Gunn recently shared a story about a time when Gunn shouted an alternate line for Stallone to try on set, but the legendary actor refused to say it.
The line in question was, “I gotta go take a shit.” While it may have fit in with the teenager-level humor that the Guardians movies are known for, Stallone wasn’t comfortable saying it. Despite Gunn’s insistence that it would be funny, Stallone stood his ground and refused to say the line. However, in refusing to say it out loud, Stallone inadvertently gave Gunn the audio he needed to include the line in the final cut of the film.
While improvisation has led to some of the funniest moments in the Guardians franchise, not all cast members are comfortable with it. But with the upcoming release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, fans can expect more of the humor and improvisation that has made this series so beloved. And while this may be the final mission for the Guardians, Marvel Studios has plenty of upcoming projects to look forward to.
