Senator Ted Cruz, who hosts a podcast called “Verdict with Ted Cruz,” expressed his strong displeasure over the news that former President Donald Trump is the focus of special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into the events of January 6th. Trump revealed that he received a “target letter” and expects to be arrested and indicted as part of the investigation.
Cruz, a staunch Trump supporter, referred to the situation as “election interference” on his podcast. He criticized both Jack Smith and Attorney General Merrick Garland, accusing them of engaging in a political vendetta against Trump. Cruz had previously outlined five troubling facts about Jack Smith on a previous episode of his podcast, further fueling his belief in the alleged bias of the special counsel.
According to Cruz, Smith’s appointment by Garland, a political and partisan attorney general, raised concerns about potential bias in the investigation. He also accused Smith of leading a controversial prosecution of Bob McDonald, a former Republican Governor of Virginia and presidential candidate, and being involved in the IRS targeting of conservatives under the Obama administration.
The Senator also pointed out that Smith’s wife, filmmaker Katy Chevigny, is a donor to the Democratic Party, specifically Joe Biden. He highlighted her work on a documentary about Michelle Obama in 2020 and alleged that her other film projects demonstrate a bias against free speech.
Cruz asserted that the investigation’s objective is to defeat Donald Trump in the upcoming elections, and he accused Smith and Garland of using the Department of Justice to advance their political agenda.

Smith’s wife, filmmaker Katy Chevigny, produced a documentary about Michelle Obama in 2020, which Cruz says turned Obama into a “saint.” He also alleged that Chevigny’s other film work proves that she “hates your free speech.”
