Former Vice President Al Gore asserted that everyone should show respect for former President Donald Trump’s followers during “this campaign season.”
In an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Saturday, Gore talked about the potential for President Joe Biden to face Trump once more in the general election of 2024.
He pointed out that Biden has many advantages as a contender, particularly with the record highs being reached by Wall Street and the ongoing decline in unemployment.
Gore feels that if Democrats and Trump face off, they should “maintain respect” for Trump’s followers, who he claims are “using” the former president as a vehicle for their resentment. Gore went on to say that in order to persuade those folks to back Biden, Democrats need to portray his economy as robust.
AMANPOUR: There’s a lot of narrative in the air about, you know, about about about Biden and a lot of sort of almost premature fatalism about a Trump victory. What should they be saying to counter, really, Trump, which is who is a bigger master of the public information space and the information wars?
GORE: Well, Trump’s mastery has been in doubt in the last couple of weeks with confusing, Nancy Pelosi with Nikki Haley and can confusing other things. And I think, you know, I don’t want to get into talking about him.
I respect his supporters. And I think it’s really important in this campaign season for people to maintain respect for his supporters. Many of them, are using Trump as a vehicle to express their anger at how they, don’t think things have been going in the right direction.
But to answer your question, Christiane, I think that more and more people are just now beginning to wake up to the fact that things are beginning to go in the right direction. Inflation has come down dramatically. Now the political influence is still there.
But, ten months from now, if the trend continues, inflation may not be an issue. Employment is at all time record high levels. The unemployment has been at record lows. Inequality is being reduced. And the wages are going up faster in the lowest income brackets.
That’s something many of us have wanted and worked for for a long time.
According to Real Clear Politics, Trump maintains a slight lead over Biden by 1.8%, well within the margin of error heading towards November.
