It has been noted that former President Donald Trump went after Nikki Haley’s husband on Saturday during a rally speech to supporters in Conway, South Carolina, and falsely implied that the marriage could be over.
Haley has served under Trump as his ambassador to the United Nations and has been running against Trump in the GOP presidential primary. Despite once serving as the governor of South Carolina, Trump has a major lead in the polls and support from the state’s top political leaders.
On Saturday, Trump claimed Haley promised him at a private meeting in Mar-a-Lago that she would not run against him. He then claimed her husband is not with her on the campaign trail.
“She comes over to see me at Mar-A-Lago. ‘Sir, I will never run against you,’” Trump told the crowd. “She brought her husband. Where’s her husband? Oh, he’s away. He’s away. What happened to her husband? What happened to her husband?! Where is he?! He’s gone. He knew. He knew.”
Haley’s spouse, Maj. According to The New York Times, Michael Haley is currently serving on a yearlong deployment in Africa as a National Guardsman.
Trump then claimed he only appointed Haley to the role of UN ambassador so that then-Lieutenant Gov. of South Carolina Henry McMaster would succeed her as governor.
“And I’ll tell you what. She did a job. She was fine. She was okay. But I didn’t put her there because I wanted her there at the United Nations,” Trump added. “I wanted to take your lieutenant governor who’s right here, and make him governor. That’s what I wanted.”
