Former President Donald Trump recently discussed potential vice-presidential candidate Gov. Doug Burgum’s stance on abortion, suggesting it could pose a challenge to Burgum’s aspirations. In an interview with Fox News Radio, Trump acknowledged Burgum’s strengths but pointed out that North Dakota’s stringent pro-life policies could be a contentious issue.

Trump noted that Burgum has taken a very strong stance in support of North Dakota’s pro-life laws, which include some of the strictest measures in the country following the overturn of Roe v. Wade. These laws outlaw abortions except in cases where there are serious health risks to the mother, with exceptions also allowed for rape or incest up until six weeks.

As governor, Burgum signed these pro-life measures into law after they were approved by the state legislature. Trump’s comments indicate that while he views Burgum favorably overall, the governor’s stance on abortion presents a potential complication in his selection process for a running mate.

In addition to Burgum, Trump mentioned Florida Sen. Marco Rubio as another contender for the vice-presidential slot. However, he noted that Rubio’s residence in Florida could complicate matters, as electoral rules prohibit electors from voting for both a president and vice-president from the same state. Trump indicated that resolving this issue would require procedural adjustments involving delegates or potentially a resignation.

Trump intends to announce his vice-presidential pick at the upcoming Republican National Convention, scheduled to begin next week, or possibly just before the event commences. This decision will likely reflect not only political considerations but also strategic alignments with key issues such as abortion policy.
