Donald Trump Jr., former President Trump’s eldest son, dismissed the Secret Service director’s concerns about the sloped roof from which a gunman shot at the former president during a rally. Speaking with Sean Hannity on Fox News, Trump Jr. called these concerns “nonsense.”
Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle explained that the sloped roof was considered a “safety factor,” which is why law enforcement was stationed inside the building instead of on the roof. Trump Jr., who claims to know many Secret Service agents personally, argued that they are not worried about a slightly sloped roof, calling it a “dumb excuse.”
The incident occurred on Saturday in Butler, Pa., where a bullet grazed the ear of former President Trump, who was recently named the GOP nominee for the White House. The gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, climbed a building near the rally and fired shots at Trump. Crooks and one attendee were killed, and two others were critically injured.
This event has led to increased concerns about security, with some calling for Secret Service Director Cheatle to step down, a demand she has rejected. Trump Jr. also mentioned video footage showing rally attendees noticing the shooter on the roof before he started firing, further questioning the security measures.
Despite the shooting, Trump Jr. said his father was in “great spirits” and remains committed to his political fight. At the Republican National Convention, Trump appeared with a bandage over his right ear. Trump Jr. attributed his father’s quick reaction during the shooting to “divine intervention,” despite not considering himself overly spiritual.
