Shapiro spoke to the reporters and said that he had spoken to Comperatore’s grieving widow and she relayed to him that her late husband was a big supporter of Trump.
As per Contempore’s sister, who confirmed his identity on Facebook Sunday morning, her brother “shielded his daughters” when a man police have identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire.
“The PA Trump Rally claimed the life of my brother, Corey Comperatore,” wrote Dawn Comperatore Schafer. “The hatred for one man took the life of the one man we loved the most. He was a hero that shielded his daughters. His wife and girls just lived through the unthinkable and unimaginable.”
“Hatred has no limits and love has no bounds,” she added. “Pray for my sister-in-law, nieces, my mother, sister, me and his nieces and nephews as this feels like a terrible nightmare but we know it is our painful reality.”
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that the late father and husband, who Shapiro referred to as a “girl dad” in his press conference, was a resident of Buffalo Township, Pennsylvania, where he was previously the volunteer fire chief.
The community is just minutes from Butler, where police say Crooks opened fire on Trump before being killed by the U.S. Secret Service.
Comperatore was the only person who was killed during the attempt on Trump’s life, although two other people were hospitalized while Trump was also treated and released after a bullet grazed his ear. Trump was said to have been doing fine shortly after the shooting and he traveled from Pennsylvania to his home in New Jersey hours after he was targeted.
