On Thursday morning, Steve Doocy from Fox & Friends interviewed former President Donald Trump and asked about his choice of JD Vance as his 2024 running mate. Doocy noted that Vance was selected before it was clear Kamala Harris would be the main opponent. He then asked Trump if he had any regrets about his choice, considering the possibility that Harris might select a running mate to appeal to specific demographics or key states.
Trump responded that he is still fully supportive of Vance, calling him “fantastic” and expressing confidence that it wouldn’t have mattered if Harris was the opponent. Trump emphasized that Vance’s commitment to workers and his understanding of their struggles, as reflected in his book, makes him an excellent choice.
CNN’s Harry Enten later discussed polling data, pointing out that Vance has a minus 6 point favorability rating. This makes him the first vice-presidential candidate since 1980 to have a net negative approval rating after their nomination convention.
“Mr. President. You know, it was just about a week ago that you selected JD Vance to be your running mate. Now, we know that at that point, you didn’t know that Kamala Harris was going to be your main opponent,” Doocy began, adding:
But now, she is. And I’m sure you’ve seen there have been a couple of stories out that say they wonder whether or not you feel you made the right pick, given the fact you didn’t realize you were going to be running against a woman, who might now try to pick a running mate to deliver a key state or a demographic or anything like that. You’re still 100% behind JD Vance, right?
