It has been noted that a Nevada grand jury on Wednesday indicted six Republicans who claimed they were the state’s valid electors and submitted paperwork falsely stating that Donald Trump won the state in the 2020 election via Mediaite.
The ones who were charged are Michael McDonald, Jesse Law, Jim DeGraffenreid, Durward James Hindle III, Shawn Meehan, and Eileen Rice. McDonald is the chair of the Nevada Republican Party.
It has come to light that the defendants are charged with falsifying records and each faces two felony counts. Nevada is the third state after George and Michigan to secure indictments of such pro-Trump electors.
After the election, Trump falsely claimed it had been rigged against him. His lawyers filed dozens of lawsuits challenging the results in states he lost. He also unsuccessfully pressured Republican officials in those states to try to overturn the results. The former president even urged Vice President Mike Pence to refuse to certify the results in Congress as the presiding officer, thus giving states time to recognize the pro-Trump fake electors.
Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford, who began a probe into the fake electors plot, hailed the grand jury’s indictment.
“When the efforts to undermine faith in our democracy began after the 2020 election, I made it clear that I would do everything in my power to defend the institutions of our nation and our state,” he said in a statement. “We cannot allow attacks on democracy to go unchallenged. Today’s indictments are the product of a long and thorough investigation, and as we pursue this prosecution, I am confident that our judicial system will see justice done.”
Trump himself is under indictment for his role in trying to subvert the election. Special Counsel Jack Smith is prosecuting the former president in federal court in Washington, D.C. Meanwhile, a Fulton County grand jury indicted Trump and 18 others for their efforts to reverse the results in Georgia.
He is also under indictment in New York and in federal court in Florida on unrelated matters.
