Trump’s Guy To Replace DeSantis As Florida Governor?

According to Trending Politics, speculation has been swirling within political circles regarding the potential gubernatorial bid of Rep. Matt Gaetz in Florida’s 2026 election. Recent events in Tallahassee, particularly a reception for incoming Florida House Speaker Rep. Danny Perez, have further fueled these speculations.

The center of attention at this reception seemed to be Gaetz himself, and he dropped several hints about his gubernatorial intentions, as confirmed by multiple attendees who spoke to NBC News. A longtime Florida Republican lobbyist who was present remarked that Gaetz was discussing the possibility of running for governor at the event.

While Gaetz has not publicly announced a gubernatorial run, he clarified his current political focus to NBC News, stating that he is fully committed to supporting former President Donald Trump for the 2024 presidential election. Gaetz emphasized, “My only political focus right now is Trump 2024.”

Gaetz’s relationship with the current Florida Governor, Ron DeSantis, has seen both ups and downs. However, DeSantis enjoyed significant support from Trump during his successful 2018 Republican primary campaign, which played a crucial role in his victory. Notably, Gaetz has emerged as one of Trump’s most fervent supporters in Congress, frequently defending Trump’s policies and echoing his positions on various key issues such as immigration, foreign policy, and criticisms of the mainstream media.

John Morgan, a prominent Florida trial attorney and Democratic political donor, expressed his perspective on Gaetz’s chances, suggesting that Gaetz could secure a win in a crowded field with Trump’s endorsement, stating, “I think he will. He will be running in a large field. He could win with 30 percent. Trump’s endorsement alone gets him that.”

A Florida GOP operative also echoed this sentiment, noting that Trump’s backing would be crucial for Gaetz’s campaign and that Gaetz is already seen as a frontrunner among potential candidates.

Outside of his potential gubernatorial aspirations, Gaetz remains a prominent figure in Washington, especially regarding the looming threat of a government shutdown. He has been vocal in expressing disagreements with fellow Republicans, including House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, accusing him of failing to uphold earlier promises. These tensions within the Republican Party have raised questions about its direction and leadership.

Ron DeSantis’s current term as Florida’s governor is set to end in January 2027, leaving ample time for political maneuvering and speculation leading up to the 2026 gubernatorial election in the state.
