Vince McMahon and WWE are always ripe with ideas. With not much legit competition around other than AEW, WWE kind of follows at the top of the pecking order when it comes to who and what they want to buy. Even though the Khan’s (AEW) do have more money than Vince McMahon, WWE is still a much bigger name that brands would rather be affiliated with. Becky Lynch Returns To Ring With Ex-WWE Champion.
It was recently revealed that WWE previously eyed up the Mexican wrestling circuit as they thought about buying out the promotion of CMLL. The promotion has been praised at having incredible wrestlers come through and WWE wanted to ensure they had first dibs on talent.
As stated by The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the following was stated about the acquisition: “While not known about, there were talks a few years back of WWE buying CMLL. WWE wanted to run Mexico with the idea it could get the cream of the cream talent in Mexico and then groom some of them for the U.S. market. The belief was that if they owned CMLL and got all the top talent, that AAA wouldn’t be able to keep its talent and they’d have the best of both. Where the deal fell apart was for CMLL to sell, they wanted selling the arenas as part of the deal and WWE didn’t want to own so many older arenas.”
Unfortunately, as stated above, the deal is no longer on the table.
