The Miami Herald is featuring an article with quotes from Shawn Michaels. Here are some highlights.

Michaels discusses his retirement and whether he ever wants to compete again:

“I certainly don’t get the itch,” Michaels said. “That is something that does not happen to me. I think I do get satisfied when I get to go back to do an appearance and get to be a special referee or just an autograph session. Things like that, which is something I really enjoy. Certainly, I don’t stay on the sidelines longing to be in the spotlight, but the time that I am, it’s always a great deal of fun.

“I still try to do a good job and try not to phone it in. It’s almost like two different parts of your life. The first part of your life is geared toward one direction, and the second part of your life is more geared toward another. I’m guessing that is sort of where I’m at, but not forsaking or forgetting the first part by any stretch. I’m appreciative for it and thankful for it.”

CM Punk said on Raw last week that a guy like him wouldn’t have made it onto the first episode of Raw. Michaels disputes that in the excerpt below:

“I certainly understand the point he was trying to make,” Michaels said. “It was a different time, and there was a different attitude toward us guys, but because he is a fighter and doesn’t take a lot of guff from folks — for the same reasons that he is on now and the same reason he accomplished what he has in his career now, which is a testament to him — for all of those reasons, all the good reasons and positives because he is a fighter, I think he would have been on the first show.

“I think I understand the point he was trying to make. It was a different time. There were stereotypes that needed to be broken back then, and thankfully, it was done. Hopefully, it has made a difference for Punk and the others. I think because of the type of dude he is, I don’t think he would have had anything to worry about.”

I agree.. he has become pretty plain since his “pipe bomb” so i think this “heel” turn will do him so good, as long as its done right,i know im looking forward to seeing it.

  • Tombstone

I like Punk but clearly not as much as most of the iwc does. He had one great promo and since then has become boring and mundane.

i think punk will be the anti-hero in the same way austin was. yeah, they probably have tried to turn him heel because the rock will always be a face no matter who he goes against these days, but i don’t necessarily think it’ll work out the way wwe want it to.

punk has the ability to deliver the promos that cena SHOULD have done when he was building up to face the rock at WM. those tame, repetitive ‘the rock said he’d never leave… and then he left’ promos would be absolutely ruthless if punk had delivered them – but he has to be a heel to do that, the rock can’t/won’t be portrayed as anything other than a face.

they’ll come up with something stupid as the reason for the turn, but the obvious one for me would be that back when he dropped the ‘pipebomb’ promo, his main point was that he wasn’t the focus of the wwe, wasn’t given chances to shine, didn’t have respect etc. Since then, they’ve gave him the ball and he’s ran with it, carried the company while cena was having a confidence crisis (insert line about divorce here)and became a big star, but the second cena gets his mojo back or the rock has a film to promote and takes over the show, he becomes an afterthought.

it was sudden and unexpected, but this has potential to get us through to the rumble if that’s the direction we’re headed in….

I have to agree with HBK at some level on this. CM Punk would have done well back inthe day, due to the type of guy that he is. He, himself, would have done pretty well. But he would not be anywher near the level he would be like he is today. A huge factor would be the stereotype of that times AND the kliq

I dont get why people assume punk is now heel, i mean cena fought the rock and both wer technically face.

I think the whole face/heel thing is long gone, noone cares anymore, i personally love heels, then once they change into smiling pandering buffoons i loose interest. I wanted SES punk as champ, i would have enjoyed that much more than the past year.

Just finished watching raw as was in work last nite so recorded it. Pretty good show, Austin not being on was a huge shame really. He made the attitude era. Liked the Punk heel turn at the end. Hes my favourite wrestler at the moment. I bet most people will like him regardless of him being a face or a heel. The only question is who does Punk feud with now? The Rock wont have a match until the royal rumble
